Amy pondered deeply. If the future emperor himself was following her around, claiming to fancy her, it would be a lie to say she wasn’t tempted by the promise of guaranteed wealth and glory. But her cold, rational mind quickly put the brakes on such foolish dreams.

“Becoming Empress Consort? I’d be dead before that ever happened.”

The Empress would sooner strangle Amy with her own hands than watch her precious son take Amy as his consort—and she’d do it as swiftly and brutally as possible.

But would the Crown Prince really defy his mother for her sake?

“Absolutely impossible.”

Amy shook her head firmly.

The Crown Prince had always been seen by the Empress as an inadequate son who never measured up. Their interactions consisted solely of one-sided scolding, reproach, and his apologies. Though he revered his mother, he also feared her more than anything else in the world. In such a mother-son relationship, the son inevitably had no room to resist—and the Crown Prince was no exception.

Amy took pride in having broken free from her parents’ oppression and carved out a life of her own.

Long ago, she’d already decided that someday, with the savings she’d gathered from her work as a maid, she’d settle in a warm southern land, raise cats, and live peacefully. A miserable death had no place in her plans.

The conclusion was simple.

“To secure a quiet old age, I must first cut off this meaningless affection.”

The Crown Prince was probably mistaking childhood familiarity for romantic feelings. Given they’d been comrades-in-arms, climbing the treacherous mountain that was their parents together, his confusion wasn’t entirely unreasonable.

Amy sank once more into deep thought.

The next day, she went to the Empress and revealed her plan. Though initially suspicious of Amy’s intentions, the Empress found the proposal agreeable and gave it her full support. Amy immediately set to work, selecting a noble young lady worthy of the Empress’s approval and orchestrating a so-called “chance encounter.”

“Oh my, it’s Lady Esmain! Your Highness, please greet her.”

As the bewildered Crown Prince stood there, Lady Esmain gracefully approached and offered a refined bow.

“I am Catarina of House Esmain, honored to meet the Empire’s little sun.”

“Hmph. Pleased to meet you.”

Amy quietly smiled to herself, unnoticed by anyone, as she watched the Crown Prince’s eyes keep drifting toward the young lady despite his composed reply. Since he was clearly so interested in other women, she likely wouldn’t end up as his concubine after all.

After introducing several young ladies in this manner, Amy subtly probed the Crown Prince’s true feelings.

“Which young lady did you like best?”

“Huh? What are you talking about?”

“You met four of them. Personally, I thought Lady Esmain was the best—her family, looks, and knowledge all seemed ideal. What do you think, Your Highness?”

“…Amy, I already told you I like you.”

Now more mature, the Crown Prince had caught on to Amy’s scheme of pushing him toward another woman and stiffened his expression. Amy sighed. It seemed she still needed more time.

“Then I’ll give you my answer when I turn eighteen.”

At that age, members of the imperial family typically finalized their marriages. By then, the Crown Prince would surely understand that his union was decided through intricate political calculations.

Still, it was fortunate that the Crown Prince wasn’t the type to force his will through brute strength. Though perhaps weak-willed and easily swayed by women, he never pressured Amy. Thus, she managed to buy herself another three years with him.

Her plan succeeded: over time, the Crown Prince met many women and gradually began to forget about Amy. And then, on the long-awaited day he turned eighteen—with his official betrothal as Crown Prince Consort looming—Amy was kidnapped by Lady Esmain and thrown into a freezing prison cell.

“Amy?”

Startled out of her reverie by someone calling her name, she snapped back to the present. The Second Prince, having finished his meal, was now staring at her intently.

“Oh, Your Highness. Are you done eating?”

“Yeah. You should eat quickly too, Amy.”

The Second Prince always made sure Amy ate as well. With such a gentle heart, how could rumors possibly claim he’d driven out all his servants due to a savage temper? Meeting his kind, clear eyes, Amy felt an unexpected pang in her chest.

“I’m fine.”

She cleared away the empty bowl and tidied the kitchen. The Second Prince trailed after her like a puppy needing to go out. Amy raised an eyebrow.

“Do you have something to say to me?”

She set down the dishcloth and asked bluntly. The Second Prince’s fair cheeks flushed crimson.

“…Yeah.”

“Then say it.”

“Well… um…”

The Second Prince stalled, rolling his eyes and biting then releasing his lip. Amy tapped her fingers impatiently on the table. She was busy—why drag things out like this? Just as she muttered this inwardly—

“I’ll give you this.”

The Second Prince pulled something from his pocket and carefully placed it in Amy’s hand, then quickly stepped back and wiped his palm on his trousers—not because he disliked touching her, but from sheer shyness.

Frowning slightly, Amy absentmindedly opened her hand—and her eyes widened.

“This is…”

The Second Prince lowered his gaze, his expression tense.

“Mother gave it to me long ago… She said I must give it to someone truly precious.”

His tone was solemn, almost like a marriage proposal. In a way, it was similar—after all, he was offering her his most treasured possession.

He glanced up, watching fervently as Amy stared, transfixed, at the jewel. Normally, she’d have instantly recognized the significance of his actions, but coincidentally, her mind was elsewhere.

“…”

Amy’s eyes wavered. Resting gently in her palm was a small gem—the very same one the Second Prince had shyly handed her just before her kidnapping by Lady Esmain in her previous life.

She gazed blankly at the jewel she’d cherished until her dying breath in that past life.

“So you’re giving this to me again…”

The Second Prince continued speaking.

“You know Mother was a princess of the southern realm, right? She said this is rare even there and told me to treasure it always. She even mentioned it might hold magical power.”

Amy blinked, echoing his words.

“Magical power…?”

The Second Prince nodded contentedly, then hastily added,

“Not that I actually believe that or anything…”

He seemed worried Amy might think him childish. But there was no need—her thoughts were tangled like yarn after a cat’s playful rampage.

“So it really was this that brought me back.”

Swallowing hard, she carefully lifted the jewel to eye level.

“Was it always this radiant…?”

She tilted her head. Before her regression, it had seemed dull and unremarkable, like an uncut stone—but now it shimmered brilliantly.

“And its color changes with the angle—purple, then blue, even red?”

How was this possible? She turned to the Second Prince and asked,

“What kind of gem is this?”

“Oh, it’s not a gem.”

His face brightened slightly at her question, and he answered with a hint of bashfulness.

“It’s a magic artifact.”

“A magic artifact?”

Amy’s eyes widened in astonishment. She looked back and forth between the jewel and the Second Prince, utterly bewildered.

“Isn’t that an ancient relic from a bygone era?”

Magic artifacts were divine tools forgotten by humanity after the generation of the Crown Prince and Second Prince’s great-grandfather.

Historical records spoke of wondrous devices from that age—tools that regulated temperature and humidity, emitted light in pitch darkness, summoned water from arid lands, and breathed fire upon frozen ground.

These artifacts were especially abundant in the southern realm, where the divine remains were said to be buried. Strangely, they could never be crafted by human hands—they simply appeared in the world at some point, and humans merely used them as needed. But this was only possible up until a century ago.

Now, magic artifacts lay dormant, like wind-up dolls with fully unwound springs.

“But the late Empress Consort said it could work magic.”

As a southern princess, it wouldn’t be surprising if she’d secretly inherited a national treasure passed down through the royal line. Thus, this artifact must indeed have been what brought her back. Yet its color had changed—perhaps that meant…

“If this is a magic artifact, does that mean it can’t be used anymore?”

Having fulfilled its purpose by sending her back, it was surely spent. At Amy’s words, the Second Prince’s previously sparkling eyes instantly dimmed.

“What was that jolt I felt just now when I held it—like being struck by lightning?”

He absentmindedly touched the black earring on his earlobe, his expression growing grave.

“…Probably.”

He must have thought Amy considered the artifact worthless. But that wasn’t her intention at all.

Amy stared at the Second Prince with a strange look.

“And yet you’ve treasured it all this time… You’re giving something so precious to me?”

“…Huh?”

“Especially since the late Empress Consort told you to give it only to someone truly special?”

“O-oh. Yeah.”

The Second Prince’s face brightened again. He blinked, his cheeks tinged pink, and murmured softly,

“You’re the only person precious to me, Amy.”
