“What?”

“Well… before my uncle left for the capital to become a royal guard when he was young, they… um… liked each other.”

The boy’s face flushed crimson with embarrassment. Noah and Amy’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. They never imagined such a story existed between those two. After all, gossip about other people’s love affairs was rarely dull.

Ethan clenched his fists in frustration.

“Because my uncle foolishly never asked her to come with him or even told her to wait… she eventually married Mr. Weaver.”

Judging by his gloomy expression, they could roughly guess what kind of man this Weaver was.

“At least he died early—fell and drowned while drunk. Since Mrs. Weaver worked as the head maid at the manor, she and her son managed to get by without trouble. But recently, she lost her position…”

This time, Amy snorted loudly like an agitated bull. Noah glanced at her suspiciously from the side. Regardless, Amy was inwardly jumping for joy.

‘How lucky can I get!’

If things went well, she might just be able to take them all in one go! But since this involved the Second Prince, she had to proceed cautiously. Amy forced herself to calm down.

“He has a son? How old is he?”

At Amy’s careful question, Ethan’s face brightened.

“His name is James, and he’s nineteen. He’s incredibly clever—smart enough to help Mrs. Weaver manage her ledgers. But he had an accident when he was young, so his body’s a bit impaired.”

“An accident?”

The previously gentle boy suddenly looked furious.

“When Mr. Weaver was still alive, they went somewhere together… and James got trampled by the horse Mr. Weaver was riding. If they’d treated him right away, he might have been fine, but Mr. Weaver neglected him… Later, after they returned to the manor, Mrs. Weaver desperately sought out doctors, but by then it was already too late.”

“…”

Noah and Amy’s expressions darkened. Their perfectly healthy son had suffered a permanent disability—not from a stranger, but from his own father. How devastated his mother must have been! And what about the boy himself, whose life had turned difficult overnight?

“When he’s feeling well, he can stand or take a few steps, but on bad days, he can’t move at all and just lies in bed suffering.”

Amy bit her lip. Aside from her sympathy for the mother and son, her hopes were rapidly draining away like receding tide.

‘The North is so cold—inviting them would be pointless.’

Ethan seemed to realize this himself as he spoke. The boy asked worriedly,

“Um… is the weather in the North really that harsh?”

“It snows nearly all year round—only three months are free of snow. And half that time, you’re buried so deep you can’t even move.”

“Oh…”

As expected, he’d probably hoped Vernon would agree to go with them. Ethan’s face fell. After a moment of thought, Amy lifted her head. She couldn’t give up here.

“Let’s go to your house.”

“Huh?”

Though bewildered, Ethan readily led them to the house he shared with Vernon. It was a small cabin on a hill just outside the village. As they entered the courtyard, Vernon stepped outside, sensing their presence.

He frowned upon seeing Amy and Noah. Before he could say anything, Amy strode forward, grabbed his arm, and pulled him behind the house.

“Let’s talk for a moment.”

“Huh?”

Still dazed, Vernon followed her and spoke in a lowered voice. Noah, worried about Amy, kept his eyes fixed on them the entire time. Sensing Noah’s darkening mood, Dwayne, Jack, and Bradley, who had been standing nearby, kept glancing nervously at him.

Their conversation ended quickly. Vernon, wearing a complicated expression, approached Noah and bowed politely.

“I look forward to your guidance from now on.”

“!”

Noah’s eyes widened in surprise, while Ethan and the three knights cheered loudly. Noah stared at Amy, who walked over with her usual blank expression. She simply shrugged her shoulders without a word.

Vernon went inside with Ethan to pack their belongings. In the blink of an eye, the three knights emerged, already carrying their sparse luggage—clearly possessing nothing of great value.

Amy bluntly asked Dwayne, Jack, and Bradley,

“How skilled are you three, exactly?”

Jack swallowed hard before replying,

“Well… the weakest among us could probably take on someone like Martin.”

Noah tilted his head in confusion.

“Martin? You mean Captain Martin of the Royal Guard?”

He was the one who had delivered the Emperor’s decree before Noah and Amy left the Second Prince’s palace. Jack’s face twisted in disbelief at his words.

“What? That guy actually became captain?”

Apparently, living in the countryside had left him out of the loop. Dwayne and Bradley rushed over, equally outraged.

“Wow, Deputy Commander, you really are relentless.”

“So he finally pulled it off.”

Not only had Martin, whose skill and experience were inferior to theirs, mocked them for holding the deputy commander position, but he’d also framed Vernon for his own misdeeds and successfully stolen his post… The three huddled together, gleefully tearing Martin apart with colorful insults.

They described in vivid detail how he’d stuffed things into unspeakable places and how they’d like to feed his neck to a dog. Amy had never realized Imperial speech contained such a rich variety of curses.

She cut them off and asked again,

“So, just how good are you three, really?”

Even if Martin had risen through the Empress’s backing, he wasn’t completely talentless. Dwayne proudly declared,

“We’re among the best in the Empire.”

“…”

Amy stared at them coldly without speaking. Jack grimaced.

“Well… if you count thirty fingers, then yes.”

“I see.”

So their skill ranked within the Empire’s top thirty… Amy gave them a cool, assessing look, then turned and walked to a corner of the courtyard. She stopped Noah from following and called over the mercenary captain, who had been trailing them like a shadow.

“I’d like to amend our contract.”

“…”

At Amy’s words, the mercenary captain raised an eyebrow, then silently nodded.

Vernon emerged from the house carrying a large bundle, accompanied by Ethan. The knights divided the luggage among themselves and followed Amy and Noah to an inn just outside the village.

“You’re a bit late.”

Joseph, who had been waiting for them at the inn, came out to greet Noah.

He then exchanged greetings with Vernon’s newly joined group and supervised the loading of pre-prepared supplies onto the horses and carriage. Amy and Noah climbed into the carriage and took their seats.

At that moment, Bradley tilted his head in confusion.

“What’s this? The presence feels lighter.”

“Yeah, it does.”

Their gazes turned toward the mercenaries. Sensing something, Noah looked across at Amy. Without even glancing up, she unfolded some documents and murmured softly,

“I’ve left some mercenaries behind to protect Mrs. Weaver and her son. Since we’ve gained unexpected reinforcements, it should be fine.”

“…”

With his sharp mind, Noah realized this must have been the condition for securing Vernon’s service—and that Amy hadn’t abandoned Mrs. Weaver after all.

Amy quickly reviewed the documents, sent off a letter via messenger bird to clear her pending tasks, and finally, once everything was ready, turned to Noah with a cheerful smile.

“Shall we head back to His Highness’s lands, then?”

***

Neidlemann Castle in the North. Melburn, who had served as butler here for three generations, swallowed hard as he glared at the messenger bird—the source of his recent headaches.

“Here again? What does she want this time?”

Rita, Melburn’s distant relative and a maid at Neidlemann Castle, handed the bird some dry grass and asked. Reluctantly, Melburn finally untied the letter from the bird’s leg and unfolded it. After skimming the contents, his eyebrows twitched.

“…Carpenters are coming.”

Lost in thought, Melburn fell silent. Rita, reading his mood, ventured a comment.

“Well… isn’t that a good thing?”

“What?”

Melburn looked baffled. Rita stroked the messenger bird and declared firmly,

“Think about it. Just because the North is harsh and produces little, the capital has always looked down on us, right? All the previous dukes stayed comfortably in the warm south or near the capital, governing half-heartedly…”

Rita’s lips pursed as her eyes swept over the castle interior.

“But this new duke is already ordering repairs before even arriving! Not long ago, he sent stonemasons to completely renovate not just the inner and outer keeps, but also the servants’ quarters, guard posts, and training grounds…”

“Hmm.”

“The children are so happy the wind no longer whistles through the walls. And now he’s sending carpenters too—it seems he truly intends to properly fortify the castle.”

“That’s true enough.”

The ducal castle where he was born and raised had never been in such good condition. Though its exterior remained as gloomy as ever, the interior renovations effectively blocked the North’s bone-chilling winds, greatly improving heating efficiency. Winter expenses would surely decrease.

“Everyone’s already clamoring about loyalty to the duke. Though… I suppose he won’t actually live here anyway.”

Unlike the previous dukes, whom they’d openly mocked for never residing in their domain, her tone was noticeably softer now. After all, to someone from the capital, the North’s weather wasn’t just harsh—it bordered on a natural disaster.

But unlike his predecessors, at least this Second Prince was making an effort to show some presence. Moreover, while ordinary lords would prioritize renovating the inner keep where they themselves stayed, the Second Prince had first repaired the outer keep for guests, the training grounds, and the servants’ quarters—putting the residents first. This made him impossible to ignore.

‘Unless there’s treasure hidden beneath centuries of ice, the North will never become warm and prosperous.’

Rita thought this absentmindedly, completely unaware that her thoughts aligned exactly with those of the steward who would soon arrive here.

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead is a Divorced Husband

She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.

After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.

She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.

But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…

Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

――

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!

The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.

That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”

Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”

The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”

That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”

Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”

The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.

Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.

“She was originally a ‘she’!”

At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.

The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
