A thin plank was laid between the ship and the dock. Amy and Sally leaned on each other, carefully walking across it until they safely reached solid ground. Their relief at having disembarked lasted only a moment before they sighed again upon surveying their surroundings.

In front of a few shabby huts, hastily built from rough wood, stood a couple of grubby children and several gaunt adults, all watching them with wary eyes.

Among them, a dark-skinned, extremely thin boy hesitantly approached them.

“Jimmy, keep a close watch on them.”

A man spoke to the boy.

‘His name is Jimmy.’

Amy studied the boy intently. Jimmy, with limbs as long and slender as a newborn fawn’s, had unnaturally pale skin—likely from malnutrition—but his eyes sparkled with sharp intelligence. After glancing briefly at Amy and Sally, the boy bowed his head deeply to the man.

“This way, please.”

At Jimmy’s words, Amy and Sally reluctantly followed him with slow, unwilling steps. The boy led them past a couple of huts and onto a narrow path winding through the trees.

Knowing the only person trailing them was the man who’d disembarked with them, Amy surreptitiously scanned the area for a chance to escape. But she quickly abandoned the idea upon spotting the wooden boat that soon appeared.

“Get in.”

“……Weren’t we supposed to stay here?”

Amy turned to the man with a stiff expression and asked. He merely shrugged.

“I’m just doing as I’m told.”
