“Mama, mamama.”

“Hold on, your food is coming.”

Even as I grumbled, I couldn’t help but warm the milk for the baby. It’s already been a while since I started living with the child…

“My goodness, it’s been a week already. This is crazy.”

A week has passed since I entrusted the detective with the task of finding the baby’s father, after his contemptuous gaze seemed to fade when I shifted the request from finding the child abandoner to finding the father. It seemed like the detective had decided to view me not as a despicable human but as a somewhat pitiable mother.

Whether I felt wronged or not didn’t matter. In this rural village where I fled alone and had to hide my identity, the only person I could turn to was that unpalatable detective.

Even though I had paid extra to expedite the investigation, there was no word from his office for a week.

That week was nothing short of hell for me.

A sort of ‘childcare hell,’ you could say.

Having never dated, let alone married, in my previous life, taking care of a toddler was driving me insane.

“Mumumua!”

“I’m coming, hold on!”

Reflecting on a week with the child, I realized that babies are truly miraculous beings. They can be happily playing one moment and suddenly start crying and fussing the next. And their energy – it’s inexhaustible. Just a moment’s distraction, and they’re crawling all over the house, getting into everything and bumping into things. I couldn’t let my guard down for a second.

I had no idea that raising a child could be this hard. Especially since I was completely alone, without even a maid to help.

In a world without the ocean of information available on the internet, being a 20-something single mother with no knowledge of childcare was extremely challenging.

The baby, who had been on the verge of crying, became calm and sucked vigorously on the bottle once fed.

Tears hung at the tips of the baby’s long eyelashes.

I gently tapped the teardrop with my finger, causing the baby to giggle cutely while drinking milk.

“…When you’re this quiet, you really are like an angel.”

I never thought I’d agree with the saying that babies are most lovable when they’re sleeping.

I was grateful for the brief respite of quiet and peace, especially after the struggle of making baby food all morning.

“When will this darn detective contact me?”

A week should have been enough time for some sort of update. Was my expectation for a competent professional in this small rural village too high?

As the baby finished the bottle, it started to blink sleepily.

“Full and sleepy, huh?”

It wasn’t nap time yet, but the baby seemed ready to sleep. I carefully lifted the baby and headed upstairs.

The small log cabin I chose as a hideout wasn’t big, but it was perfect for living alone. The first floor had a living room, kitchen, and a small guest room, while the second floor housed the bedroom.

“Up we go.”

I gently removed the half-finished bottle, careful not to spill the remaining milk. After patting the baby’s back for a burp, I laid the baby on the bed, surrounded by pillows to prevent falling off.

The baby’s lips, already red, were even more so from the vigorous feeding.

Now, all I could do was wait for the detective’s call and wonder how to handle the unexpected turn my life had taken with this child.
The rosy hue returning to the child’s face was so lovely that I lost myself in watching it for a moment.

Then, suddenly, there was a loud knocking from downstairs.

“Who is it?”

Who could it be…? Ah! They must have found the baby’s father!

Since the detective was the only one likely to visit me, I didn’t hesitate and rushed downstairs to open the door.

“Why did it take so long! I even paid extra. If I knew it would take this long, I wouldn’t have paid that. I’ve been through so much…”

I was about to unleash a week’s worth of pent-up frustration on the detective when I froze, confronted by the large man at my door.

…This man isn’t the detective?

He was completely different from the detective I met a week ago – different in height, build, and even the face.

And he was fully armed.

“…Who are you?”

“Long time no see, Countess Louijet.”

The way the man uttered my name sounded so natural, as if I had heard his voice many times before.

“Do you know me?”

His face stiffened at my question. Did I know him?

“…I didn’t expect a warm welcome.”

“What?”

What is he talking about?

“I don’t think I deserve to be turned away at the door like this.”

A red flag went up in my mind at the stranger’s words. This man could be dangerous. Perhaps it was Countess Louijet’s instincts warning me.

My mind was already too cluttered with thoughts about the baby to entertain any more.

I reached to close the door.

“I think you have the wrong house. Goodbye.”

“I said I don’t deserve to be treated like this at the door.”

But the man was quicker, wedging his foot in the door and pushing it open before I could react.

“Good to see you again. It’s been almost two years.”

He didn’t seem to need my response as he continued speaking and stepped inside.
