“You see that building over there—the one going up?”

Hong Su Jin suddenly raised her hand and pointed toward a distant construction site. It was a tall building, nearly complete.

Hong Su Jin seemed eager to shift the mood. Her voice brightened.

“I heard they’re building a hotel there?”

“That’s right. I heard Pyeongan Construction is handling it. Didn’t you know? That plot was one your mother once coveted. Seeing Pyeongan build a hotel exactly there felt strangely uncanny to me. I wonder—did your maternal family know that land was something your mother had wanted? Of all places, they chose that plot for a hotel.”

Ga Eul stared at the hotel under construction. Knowing it stood on land her mother had desired made it impossible to view it indifferently. Yet a question suddenly struck her—had her mother truly been interested in real estate?

“Mom wanted that land? But she never seemed interested in real estate investment…”

“She wasn’t trying to invest—it was to buy that land and build a botanical garden.”

Only then did Ga Eul recall her mother mentioning several times how much she’d wanted a botanical garden. Her mother had spoken of it casually, but apparently, she’d seriously considered making it a reality.

“We all assumed your father had bought that land—for your mother. Her dream was to own a botanical garden, after all, so we thought he’d bought it to fulfill that dream for her.”

Hong Su Jin confirmed what Ga Eul had been pondering.

“Your maternal grandparents visited this area multiple times—specifically to see that plot. So our family tagged along on a trip, too. Even Sung Mok’s father looked into buying some land nearby. But after your mother passed away, everything just fizzled out.”

So the vacation Ga Eul’s family and Sung Mok’s family took together to Taean hadn’t been mere coincidence.

“Could it be your maternal grandfather bought that land to fulfill your mother’s dream—and then, after she passed, decided to build a hotel there instead?”

Ga Eul shook her head. Madam Jang Ji Hong had told her she first reached out only after her mother fell ill—and that her mother had refused the family’s help. It didn’t seem there had been meaningful contact with her maternal family, either before or after.
