When The Silver Bell Of Charlotte's Pharmacy Rings (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
Charlotte carefully listened to Tae Mi’s story while chewing and swallowing the rest of her donut.
She slowly moved her gaze as if observing passersby and spoke.
“About the reward?”
“I just told you, didn’t I? The man’s drowning in money, and his only daughter is more precious to him than gold itself. He’ll pay whatever you ask.”
Her eyes, as vividly blue as a field of young barley, shifted slowly. Very slowly…
Eventually, Charlotte nodded.
“Alright. Tell him I’ll pay a visit.”
“The sooner, the better. Whatever illness it is, if his daughter stops breathing, it’ll be too late.”
“Did you see it yourself? What are the symptoms like?”
After gulping down a large donut and thumping his chest a few times, Tae Mi exhaled deeply.
“I only saw her briefly. She’s completely unconscious, like she’s dead, and her breathing is weak. I gently pressed her stomach—no lumps, nothing unusual. Yet, until the day before yesterday, she was still conscious and kept saying her stomach hurt… According to her mother, it felt as if someone were pinching her insides.”
“Pinching… Definitely not just indigestion, then.”
“Could she have swallowed something strange?”
Charlotte, silent for a moment, finally spoke.
“We can’t know for sure whether she swallowed it or something invaded her. For now, the only option is to make her vomit everything in her stomach. Since she’s unconscious, that’s not a good sign. She might not have much time left. Perhaps something is physically ‘eating her from the inside.'”
“That’s exactly why you should go quickly. Even I could tell—she’s completely pale…”
Damn it. Charlotte cursed briefly under her breath.
She already had so much to do today; this was the last thing she needed—she’d need three bodies to handle everything.
“Not today. But I’ll give you some medicine to restore consciousness. Take it and go ahead to that Grimel fellow’s house first, Tae Mi.”
“When will you come?”
“At the earliest, tonight. At the latest, before midnight. I won’t be later than that. Probably.”
“Alright.”
Tae Mi brushed crumbs from his mouth and stood up.
Charlotte hastily wrapped the uneaten donut in paper, tossed it away, and rose to follow.
On their way back to Charlotte’s shop, the two walked as if strangers, keeping their distance.
Every time Charlotte warmly greeted passersby or exchanged brief pleasantries, Tae Mi had to stifle laughter several times.
He could never get used to her pretentiousness, no matter how often he saw it.
“Oh, Charlotte! Have you finished lunch already?”
Yuno from the fruit stall waved. Charlotte smiled gently and replied,
“They ran out of ingredients, so I just ate a donut.”
“Oh dear! Wait a moment. Let me pack you some fruit—you need something more filling.”
Just as she’d expected, Yuno filled the basket Charlotte had given him with fruit until it overflowed.
Oranges, limes, and peaches so plump and fresh they looked sweet and crisp filled the basket to the brim.
“Mr. Yuno! This is too much. I feel bad taking all this.”
Yuno chuckled heartily.
“Feel bad? You saved my son’s life when he was on the verge of death! Of course I can do this much. Take it, eat it, and come back if you need more.”
Charlotte accepted the heavy basket with a bright smile.
“Thank you, Mr. Yuno.”
She unlocked the door and entered her shop but didn’t flip the sign to “Out.”
Tae Mi loitered nearby for a while before finally opening the door a short while after Charlotte had gone inside.
The soft jingle of the silver bell spread through the shop like gentle music.
“You’re such a phony. ‘Thank you so much, Mr. Yuno.’ Seriously, doesn’t acting like that make your skin crawl?”
“If you want to live, shut your mouth, Tae Mi.”
While Charlotte searched the shelves for tinctures, Tae Mi grinned and plucked a peach from the basket, sinking his teeth into it with a crunch.
Juice splattered everywhere, but without even turning around, Charlotte said,
“Are you going to lick up everything you spilled? If not, wipe it clean right now—I hate anything sticky.”
“Yes, yes, Your Highness. Whose orders are these again?”
Tae Mi hastily wiped the juice off with his sleeve and boot, finishing the large peach in just three bites.
Meanwhile, Charlotte placed two brown tincture bottles and a bundle of dried herbs with a bitter aroma onto the glass countertop.
“First, give the girl these tinctures—one or two drops each. If her color returns, you can give up to three drops, but no more.”

“And if that doesn’t work?”
Charlotte lifted the bundle of herbs.
“Soak this in warm water, mash it, and apply it to her forehead, under her eyes, her palms, and between her collarbones. That should definitely restore her consciousness, though the pain will likely remain. Then—”
She ducked beneath the counter.
When she straightened up again, she held a strangely shimmering stone in her hand.
“Have her hold this in her mouth. Tell her not to swallow—it’s an actual stone.”
“So even after doing all this, she still might not vomit whatever’s inside her?”
Charlotte’s rounded shoulders lifted slightly.
“Probably. If she’s lucky enough to vomit, that’s a relief. Save whatever comes out.”
“Damn it, now I have to scrape up her vomit too.”
Though grumbling playfully, Tae Mi carefully placed everything Charlotte gave him into an old leather pouch. He wrapped the stone separately in a worn cloth.
Charlotte, arms crossed, watched him and gave a cautious nod.
“How’s your leg these days?”
Tae Mi looked at her, puzzled by the sudden question, then lowered his gaze.
“Well, same as always.”
“And the pain?”
“It stings a bit on rainy days. But it’s bearable.”
“If it hurts badly, come see me. Don’t stubbornly endure it.”
Gruff as it was, his words were laced with concern. Tae Mi grinned, revealing white teeth.
His clothes were shabby, but up close, he was truly a handsome young man.
“I’ll head over first. Don’t be too late.”
“Don’t worry. Have you ever seen me miss an appointment?”
The silver bell jingled again. Charlotte watched Tae Mi’s retreating figure through the glass window until the echo of the bell faded.
Seeing his shoulder rise and fall heavily with each step, irritation and unspoken frustration welled up in her throat.
That dreadful voice, like scraping metal, had been filled with agony.
Charlotte shuddered at the thick stench of blood still lingering in her nostrils and shook her head.
That was all in the past.
She flipped the sign on the door to “Closed.”
Then, lowering the blinds on the window, she hurried into her small house attached behind the shop.
[This is the timeline separator]The ornate four-wheeled carriage glided smoothly over the cobblestones and gradually came to a halt.
A servant seated beside the coachman opened the door, and a tall man stepped out gracefully.
Though he tilted his wide-brimmed hat to half-cover his face, he was clearly a young man with a sharply defined nose and lips.
His smooth, unwrinkled mouth was taut—as if from tension or anger.
Utterly indifferent to passersby, he naturally turned into the alley.
Glancing around the deserted area from beneath his hat brim, he gave a light knock on the shabby wooden door. Immediately, someone opened it from within.
“You’ve arrived.”
An elderly man bowed respectfully and ushered him inside. The man cast a quick glance back toward the carriage before stepping confidently through the worn doorway.
Though it was broad daylight, the interior was as dark as night.
Lanterns had been lit here and there, but they only added to the eerie atmosphere.
“Your hat.”
At the old man’s words, the man finally removed the hat that had wholly obscured his face and handed it over.
Beneath the lantern light, his striking golden hair and sunset-colored eyes gleamed brightly—undeniably a handsome man.
“And the others?”
His voice was low and calm. Though he appeared barely thirty, he carried an unmistakable air of authority that no one dared defy.
“They’re waiting inside. Please come in.”
The old man led the way. The interior was far larger than it appeared from outside.
Though lacking lavish decoration, it was filled with a subtle fragrance, and antique furniture graced every corner.
When the solid ebony door opened, three people seated around a round table turned toward him.

Two of them were middle-aged—a man and a woman—and the third was an older man.
“Duke Elinak, you’re here.”
The middle-aged woman smiled faintly as she began.
The man addressed as Duke Elinak gave a slight bow.
“I’m late.”
“It’s fine. We’ve only just arrived ourselves. Please, take a seat.”
The eldest man gestured to a chair. As Duke Elinak sat down, the door closed softly behind him.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve gathered all the Hook Auditors.”
The woman spoke. The other middle-aged man seated beside her bowed respectfully.
“Please tell us the matter at hand, Your Majesty.”
The woman slowly lifted her head. Though her smile remained in the lamplight, an untouchable dignity and resolve radiated from her.
Dressed in a simple gown and wearing no veil, she was none other than King Ryuen Vandrop of this nation.
The nineteenth ruler of Roanoke, she had dissolved the corrupt revolutionary government that had faltered under indecisive leadership and restored the monarchy. Learning from her ancestors’ failures, she became the first monarch to implement a bureaucratic system.
Ryuen slowly surveyed the three individuals before her.
Count Scrabster, the eldest and most experienced; Marquis Mattele, seasoned and shrewd; and Duke Elinak Matiel—the youngest of them, yet agile and brilliant, whom she held in high regard.
They were members of the Hook Auditors, tasked with investigating various incidents across the Roanoke Kingdom.
Unlike royal officials such as the Royal Administrative Minister, Army Chief, or Chief Justice—who operated as bureaucrats under the crown—the Hook Auditors answered solely to the king’s direct command. Only the king herself, Ryuen, and the three members knew of their existence.

I’m on Tar Mi’s side here. The Duke seems a bit too careless about his relationship with Charlotte. Feelings or no, it’s as if he hasn’t given any thought to the consequences any of his actions will have on her and her life. I’d say any feelings he has are superficial at best.
