“I spoke because I wanted to help……. I’m worried that I might have taken up your time or meddled unnecessarily.”

“Ah, no. It was helpful.”

I hadn’t known that Giorgio had been meeting separately with Count Vallemont. Emilia quickly shook her head.

Alessandro smiled gently, as if relieved. Seeing that smile, Emilia wondered if there was anything more she should ask him. She had come out because he said he had something to tell her, but since what she wanted to know was only about her parents, she had no idea how much he actually knew.

Just as her hesitation was about to drag on, a knock fortunately sounded. As the ordered dishes quickly filled the table, Alessandro made a polite gesture suggesting they eat first.

The meal proceeded in silence. Her mind was so tangled she barely noticed whether the food was going into her mouth or her nose, but she was glad to have even a brief moment to think.

‘At the party, I apparently seemed more interested in Count Vallemont, so I might need to give a reason for that…….’

Should she say it was because she found the automobile investment rights he mentioned interesting? According to Enrico, a large number of investors had been kept anonymous, so she was a little curious whether he had somehow tracked down those shares and arranged to receive them.

But was it right to ask Alessandro about that?

She wasn’t entirely sure. Yet doing nothing felt even stranger than sending away someone who had appeared saying he would tell her something first.

Emilia scooped a spoonful of the fruit ice cream that had come out last and glanced at Alessandro. She had thought he would have no interest in dessert like Enrico, but surprisingly, he was eating quite well.

“Um, may I ask one thing?”

“Gladly.”

“I’m hesitant because it feels like prying into someone else’s private matters, but please let me know if it makes you uncomfortable.”

“Haha, understood.”
