“So you’re finally looking at me again.”

He swept his now-drier hair back and gave a brief smile. Frowning at his incomprehensible words, she fell silent, unsettled by the sudden shift in his demeanor.

“Since it’s late, as you said, I’ll take my leave now.”

He promptly stepped back neatly. She watched his broad back quietly as he turned away after meeting her eyes once, and when he paused at the door, she tensed slightly.

“But you just said earlier it was late.”

Emilia blinked in surprise at his unexpected remark, having braced herself for another jab.

The sound of the door opening revealed his profile in the lamplight, his violet eyes glinting as he glanced back briefly.

“So does that mean it’s fine during the day?”

Emilia had slept poorly the previous night and left the duke’s residence at dawn. Though partly due to minding others’ gazes, she also simply didn’t want to stay any longer uncomfortably at his mansion.

His remark, neither a joke nor reasonable, left her momentarily speechless. “Is it fine during the day?”—was that even a proper question? Then again, he hadn’t really asked; it was clearly meant to provoke her.

‘Strange, rude, and outrageously arrogant man.’

Though he seemed to dislike her arguing back, whenever she stayed quiet, he’d deliberately provoke her first—being around Enrico alone always stirred her emotions unusually.

She sensed Zabeta beside her quietly observing her mood. Zabeta had already been waiting by the front door despite the early hour, somehow knowing Emilia would stop by home before heading to the opera house. The carriage had been ready in advance too, making the return journey unusually smooth.
