Tae Gyu rubbed his dry, bloodshot eyes from staying up all night as he descended the hospital stairs.

He was on his way to Neurosurgery—to return the documents he’d received from Hee Won yesterday and to pick up new academic papers—when, through the slightly ajar emergency exit door, he suddenly caught sight of the Thoracic Surgery station.

From the gap in the door, cheerful laughter drifted out. It was Na Rim’s laughter.

“That bastard.”

His face, twisted with anger, his body trembling violently. Tae Gyu unconsciously brushed the cheek Na Rim had slapped and gave a bitter smile.

He deserved it. After all, he’d deliberately chosen only the most hurtful words to throw at her.

Because of one night’s mistake, he’d hoped neither he nor she would carry emotional responsibility—he hoped their feelings weren’t real, because he knew all too well how such encounters ended. He’d lived through far too many of them.

His momentarily halted footsteps resumed—not toward Neurosurgery, one more floor down, but toward Thoracic Surgery instead.

Fine. I’ll take being “that bastard.” Let’s act like everything that happened never did. I’ll return to my original place. So please, let’s not create any awkward complications.

With decisive, unhesitating strides, he reached the Thoracic Surgery station—only for his brow to furrow in confusion.

“Hello, Professor Yoon.”

It had unmistakably been Na Rim’s laughter. He was certain he’d heard it…

“Y-yes… Hello.”

Tae Gyu’s greeting was directed not at the nurse but at the station interior he scanned intently.

Na Rim was nowhere to be seen.
