With the council quiet and Grand Duke Montaner even quieter, the day was utterly perfect.
He briefly considered leaving the palace early to inspect the household affairs at the ducal residence. Just as he finished organizing his documents and was about to rise from his seat, his aide entered with a message.
“Your Grace. A reply has arrived from Alain.”
Alain was the royal palace’s head chef.
Ishar had sent a letter asking whether he’d successfully prepared the dish the appetite-less Empress had requested, and this appeared to be the response.
He’d been wondering all day whether Alain had already delivered it, given the silence.
“He says… he couldn’t make it.”
“Why not?”
Confusion flickered in Ishar’s eyes.
‘Could it be a dish so difficult even Alain couldn’t prepare it?’
“Her Majesty said it’s fine. She told him not to trouble himself.”
So, Alain hadn’t even attempted it!
