In the quiet darkness of midnight, the bedroom door silently opened and then closed again. Liz slowly opened her eyes.

She had been pretending to sleep until Hersys left the bedchamber.

He would surely head to his study again today. Since sleep wouldn’t come anyway, he probably thought he might as well work.

Though this wasn’t the first or second time it had happened, her heart still ached.

When would he finally fall into such a deep slumber that he wouldn’t even notice if someone carried him away?

Liz sighed and slowly sat up.

Stepping onto the floor, Liz glanced around warily for a moment before walking toward the small room connected to the bedchamber. It was where valuable jewelry was kept, and only Rene and Rosa, besides herself, were permitted to enter.

Walking through the rows of glass display cases filled with sleeping gems, Liz finally stopped before a bust positioned right in the center of the far wall.

It had arrived half a season ago as a congratulatory gift from the Neran Kingdom for her pregnancy—an ornate necklace hung upon the bust, too extravagant to wear but perfect for display.

Liz lifted the entire bust and set it down on the floor.

Then she removed the velvet cover from the shelf where the bust had stood. Beneath the cover wasn’t a shelf but an oak chest.

Opening the lid revealed hundreds of palm-sized gold ingots gleaming with the luster of pure gold even in the darkness.

Their smooth surfaces were so tempting she longed to touch them.

“So this is worth ten million gold?”
