It was a chilling sight, even upon a second glance.

The rows of iron-armored suits facing each other seemed ready at any moment to creak and move on their own.

Two seasons ago, Liz had passed through this place on her way to the ancient manuscript reading room, searching for the meaning of “Pardelio Hisculum.” Even though it had been broad daylight then, she’d hurried her steps, unnerved by an inexplicable chill—let alone now, in the evening. And not just any evening, but a midwinter one.

It was so dark that only the walls, floor, cylindrical pillars, and suits of armor were barely visible. Had Liz not possessed a clear purpose for coming here, she would have desperately wanted to turn back.

‘Where on earth is he?’

Anxiously scanning the dim space, Liz strained to sense even the faintest trace of presence. Yet whether her senses had dulled or not, she felt absolutely nothing.

‘Did I arrive too late?’

That might well be the case. She’d spent considerable time convincing Hersys to understand her sudden actions at the banquet.

Just as she was contemplating leaving, a dark figure suddenly emerged from behind a pillar at the end of the corridor.

“I was worried you might not have been able to decipher the message.”

It was Grand Duke Montaner. He truly seemed concerned—the faint relief in his voice was unmistakable.

Liz asked,

“Were you worried I might not come alone?”

“Oh, not at all. I know better than anyone that Your Majesty is a wise ruler.”

His tone was laden with meaning. But with no time to spare, Liz offered no further reply and went straight to the point.
