“Are you thirsty?”

Liz tilted her head and looked toward the back of the horse that carried me.

It didn’t seem entirely impossible.

She recalled hearing once that horses, when thirsty, would instinctively seek out water on their own.

Though she couldn’t understand why this well-trained steed—bred to obey its master above all else—was behaving so independently like a wild horse, Liz decided to simply let the horse lead for now.

In truth, she had no other choice since the horse wouldn’t stop anyway.

After passing a gentle incline, they reached a flat dirt path scattered with small stones and twigs. The birch leaves lining both sides were too sparse and thin to offer much shade from the midday sun.

As she walked alongside the horse across the sun-dappled earth, Liz tried to calculate roughly how many numbers she should be counting by now.

“Fourteen? Fifteen?”

It seemed about right. So if she turned back now, she wouldn’t be late.

Liz tugged the reins for the fifth time. But, as expected, the horse refused to listen.

“Sigh…”

It would probably be better to just get whatever this was over with quickly and return home as fast as possible. Liz loosened her grip on the reins and swung them widely.

The horse truly must have been thirsty.

Without hesitation, it veered right at the fork in the road, and soon the sound of a stream could be heard not far ahead.
