Fernando turned around, sword in hand, scanning the outside. Upon inspecting the carriage, he noticed a round dent on its exterior—clearly struck by something that had flown through the air.

As Fernando examined the multiple impact marks, he spotted debris scattered around—the remnants of a fountain statue and broken trees lay everywhere.

Who would be capable of such an act…?

“Please… spare me.”

At that moment, a pitiful groan reached Fernando’s ears, accompanied by a hand grasping his boot. He saw a woman pinned beneath a fallen tree, reaching toward him, and lifted his sword.

“P-please… spare…”

Instead of moving the tree aside, Fernando raised his blade, and the woman’s eyes widened in terror. Believing she would die for offending a noble, tears welled in her eyes.

Bracing for death amidst her blurring vision, she squeezed her eyes shut as the man swung his sword.

She thought she heard the blade cleave the wind—but when nothing happened to her, she slowly opened her eyes. She had expected death, yet strangely felt lighter. Then she noticed the tree pinning her had split cleanly in two, and her face twisted in shock.

“Come out.”

With that, Fernando strode off elsewhere, sword still in hand, as if his duty ended there. Behind him, the woman pushed the wood aside, rose shakily to her feet, and hurriedly left the spot.

“What a mess.”

That was Fernando’s only comment upon seeing the fountain. It looked as though an explosion had erupted from within, leaving it so utterly destroyed that its original shape was unrecognizable. He glanced around.

The explosion had thrown the area into chaos—statue fragments flew everywhere, and trees lay toppled.

Cries for help echoed from all directions. Apparently, many nearby had been caught in the blast, though surprisingly few appeared dead—likely because the largest fragment had flown directly toward the carriage.
