It was just as the gathering was breaking up and people were beginning to rise from their seats one by one. Etienne, who had been sitting quietly waiting because her parents still showed no sign of leaving, looked up to find Reinhart suddenly standing right before her.

She had been wondering why he’d come over while he’d been with her parents, when Reinhart glanced at Etienne’s empty hands.

“You gave flowers to Bazon, didn’t you?”

“I came here to arrange flowers. I had some trimmed blooms left over, so I gave them to a friend.”

Etienne wondered why she even needed to explain herself like this. Reinhart had merely stated a simple fact—that she’d given flowers to Bazon—yet here she was, blurting out a detailed justification as though she’d been caught doing something wrong.

“You did well.”

“Did well?”

It already felt strange enough that he was asking why she’d given flowers to someone, but Reinhart’s casual praise in response felt even weirder.

“Why was it ‘well’?”

“Because you didn’t give them to Fernando.”

Realizing why he’d praised her, Etienne sighed as though utterly exasperated.

“If you keep making it so obvious like this, what am I supposed to do? You wouldn’t even let go of my hand earlier…”

“Sneezes and love can’t be hidden—that’s just how it is.”

“Please don’t say things like that…”

Her own words had already bordered on risky if overheard by others, but Reinhart had taken it even further—stating things outright.
