“Right. From now on, it’ll always wrap up at this time.”

“It’s already past 1 a.m., but after experiencing 2 a.m. yesterday, I actually feel happy.”

In the car heading home after all the filming had ended, Bong Gi pressed the radio button with a satisfied expression. The quiet late-night radio. Its calm, unvarying melody eased tension, clearing away countless thoughts or sometimes unraveling long-held ones.

Ji Ho, who had just been chatting with Bong Gi, briefly picked up his phone. Seeing a new message, he couldn’t help but smile softly. A photo showed an elegantly handwritten English award certificate and a trophy, accompanied by cheerful, excited text.

[Ji Ho Oppa! I came in first place at the competition I entered this time! I really wanted to tell you right away… I know you’ve been super busy with work—please be careful not to catch a cold! (8:05 p.m.)]

It was a message from his younger sister, Sae Byeol. Judging by the date on the certificate, it had been last week. She’d probably paced around her piano for a whole week, unsure whether to send it or not. Though it was very late, he felt she’d still be waiting, so he typed out a reply.

[Congratulations, Sae Byeol. You did great. Take good care of yourself too. (1:20 a.m.)]

The sent message filled the screen. As he scrolled down, he saw it was only the sixth message they’d exchanged this year. Each of Sae Byeol’s messages carried the same neat, polite tone—it seemed like she’d agonized over every single sentence before sending.

“Ji Ho, listen well to Auntie. I’ll come pick you up as soon as you get better. You know how much Dad loves you, right?”

Why had he only nodded that day? Well, who ever says they need to breathe before actually breathing? That was probably why he hadn’t told his dad—those words “I love you too.” It had just felt too obvious.

If only he’d known it would be their last moment, he would’ve shouted it at the top of his lungs. But he’s certain—Dad surely knew, even without him saying it. He must’ve felt his love with his whole body. After all, Ji Ho himself had felt his father’s love the same way.

“Ah, that kid of mine who used to tremble in fear… at least he can rest peacefully now.”

The funeral was packed with uncles whose skin was deeply tanned. They’d all sailed the seas alongside his father.

Their rough, calloused hands—sturdy and hardened—wiped away tears streaming between the deep wrinkles at their eyes. Yet whenever they looked at Ji Ho, their freshly dried eyes would quickly well up again.
