The dark room fell still as Ji Ho’s message stopped Hye Yoon’s restless tossing in bed. That single short sentence hadn’t just illuminated her room.

“I’m still awake…”

Her fingers, moving faster than her thoughts, quickly typed, “Are you done now?”—but she couldn’t bring herself to hit send. The reply felt like it would cut off any chance for further conversation.

“Yes… Ji Ho, you sleep well too.”

It felt regretful that the unspoken feelings just vanished like that, so she murmured it aloud, almost to herself. There was no reason for it, and she shouldn’t have felt that way—but still, a slight disappointment lingered. As the phone screen went dark, Hye Yoon’s room dimmed again too, just like her heart.

Several days of filming went on. Over those days, Hye Yoon gradually adjusted to being here, while Ji Ho’s face began to show subtle signs of fatigue.

Next up was Ji Ho’s solo shooting scene. Hye Yoon hesitantly approached Min Woo, who was seated in front of the camera.

“Senior, but isn’t Ji Ho’s standby time earlier than mine?”

“No? It’s the same.”

Both of them watched Ji Ho moving on the camera monitor. Even with the best equipment, it seemed unable to fully capture his aura.

“But then why…?”

“He always seems to arrive before I do.”

“Ah, that’s just Ji Ho’s usual working style. I heard he usually gets here around seven. You’re supposed to be here by eight, right?”

“…Yes.”

“Same for me.”

Min Woo smiled and zoomed in on Ji Ho’s face in the camera view, as if it were consideration meant just for Hye Yoon. Thankfully, it didn’t show even the faintest trace of fatigue—though honestly, even if he did look tired, it would’ve been charming in its own way.

“It’s impressive seeing someone as busy as him act like that. Of course, it’s great for us too. I’ve hardly ever seen him call for a retake—though sometimes he’ll ask to reshoot just because he wasn’t satisfied himself.”

“Right… He must be exhausted…”

“Yeah, he’s a perfectionist. But… is he okay as a boyfriend?”

“Huh?”

Startled, Hye Yoon quickly lowered her gaze from Ji Ho’s face filling up the screen to Min Woo. Sitting on a low chair, his expression wasn’t exactly playful as he looked up at her.

“People strict with themselves tend to be strict with others too. That’s just their nature—you can’t really suppress it. Even if you try to hide it, it’ll eventually show through when they get sensitive.”

“Hmm… He’s actually really generous. And kind, just like how he treats everyone else.”

Hye Yoon paused before answering. Every memory of Ji Ho kept stirring something inside her, so she had to suppress the feelings rising in her chest.

Without a second thought, he’d been unfailingly thoughtful toward her.

“…Who said that?”

“Huh? Said what?”

But as soon as she finished answering, Min Woo turned the question back on her—as if urging her to reconsider it two or even three times over.

“Who exactly said Ji Ho takes good care of people and is kind?”

“I just always thought he seemed that way…”

His slightly cold tone made Hye Yoon’s shoulders tense up instantly. Seeing her flustered expression, Min Woo softened his look.

“Well, sure—Ji Ho’s polite and kind. But only up to a point. He never goes beyond that. And he won’t let others get too close either. Haven’t you noticed that wall he’s built?”

“…”

“In this industry, staying scandal-free for a decade straight at the top tier? There’s only one way—build high walls and live alone inside them.”

Min Woo released the close-up on the monitor and was back to his usual, easygoing smile. Watching Hye Yoon blink slowly, lost in thought, he tilted his head up slightly.

“Anyway, it’s a good thing then. If what you’re saying is true, it means Ji Ho only looks out for you and is only gentle with you.”

“…Is that really so?”

“Yeah.”

Min Woo nodded firmly, as if this needed no second thought at all. Seeing his teasing smirk, Hye Yoon gave a faint smile.

Hye Yoon looked toward the real Ji Ho standing beyond the monitor. After hearing all that, it was hard to convince herself it was all just acting—just pretending to be lovers.

‘Could it be…?’

She was afraid that tiny spark of hope might start to grow.

“I should stop eating.”

“Huh? You’ve only had half.”

Lunchtime. More than half of the delicious-looking bento still remained. Min Joo noticed Hye Yoon setting down her spoon and looked concerned. Hye Yoon usually ate slowly but always finished her meals—so this stood out.

“Yeah, eating too much feels heavy during shoots.”

“It’s not because you’re feeling unwell, is it?”

“No, no. I’m comfortably full, and actually in a good mood.”

Hye Yoon lightly tapped Min Joo’s hand that had stopped using her chopsticks. Only after seeing her start eating again did she glance around. Groups of people were scattered about, eating their lunches. The waiting room and the back of the set building were probably similar.

“Min Joo, I’ll go ahead and review the script.”

“Okay, I’ll join you right after I finish.”

“No, take your time. Chew thoroughly and maybe go for a short walk too.”

Hye Yoon gently smoothed her school skirt and patted Min Joo’s head like she was comforting a good child.

Script in hand, Hye Yoon headed toward the set. The waiting room seemed to double as a dining area, and staying in the car felt a bit stifling.

Creeeak-

The heavy door groaned open, and silence flooded in. The entire set was empty—everyone had left.

“…Huh?”

And there, alone—

Ji Ho sat in the dimly lit set, positioned between light and shadow, deeply focused on his script, still unaware of Hye Yoon’s presence. He leaned back on the living room set sofa, absorbed in reading.

His shirt collar was slightly open, his tie loosely undone. His long fingers twirled a pen with an elegance that seemed to follow a soft melody. His crossed legs ended with feet slowly fluttering up and down.

Hye Yoon stood frozen, gazing at him—then finally took a step. She feared she’d keep staring otherwise. Only when her shadow drew near did Ji Ho finally look up. Though clearly surprised by her unexpected arrival, he didn’t seem startled—almost as if he’d been waiting.

“Hmm… what’s this?”

Despite the calm in his eyes, his tone played up mock surprise.

“Oh, um… I was heading to the waiting room, but then I thought maybe I’d go back to the car…”

“Heh heh. Don’t hold back just because you know I’m joking.”

Seeing Hye Yoon fumble with awkward phrasing, Ji Ho gently eased her efforts. He already knew it was all in jest—yet still replied earnestly. He watched contentedly as she shyly lowered her head.

“Did you eat?”

“…Yes.”

“Filming uses more energy than you’d think—make sure you eat well.”

His deep voice resonated through the quiet, forest-like space, accompanied by a faint smile. Hye Yoon tightly bit her lips together—otherwise, the pounding of her heart might escape through them.

‘…Who said that?’

‘Huh? Said what?’

‘Who exactly said Ji Ho takes good care of people and is kind?’

It was only natural that Min Woo’s words now haunted her again.

Unaware of Hye Yoon’s tangled thoughts, Ji Ho gestured toward the empty seat beside him. Seeing her small feet hesitate like a lost baby duckling, he smiled faintly.

“Wow… Ji Ho, you go this far?”

Unlike her hesitant steps before, she immediately moved closer once she could see his script clearly. Every margin was densely filled with handwritten notes—his own feelings and movements jotted beneath the dialogue and stage directions.

His dedication amazed her so much that, for a moment, she forgot everything else—their knees almost touching, his deep, well-like eyes gazing up at her.

“I want to match the effort since you wrote such a great script.”

“But still… this is just… too incredible.”

“Everyone does at least this much.”

“No, they really don’t. Nobody goes this far.”

Feeling awkward under her intense stare, Ji Ho casually slipped his pen into the script and closed it. Hye Yoon watched until the very last page disappeared from view.

“Hmm… I think I need to reflect a lot.”

“Huh? All of a sudden?”

Her curiosity had bubbled up just moments ago, but now Hye Yoon suddenly looked dejected, lowering her head deeply. Ji Ho watched her quietly.

“You worked this hard for Jong Soo, and now I feel really bad toward Hee Soo.”

“Is that so…”

He even added a little prompting to encourage her further sulking. He knew it was a bit mean—but with her, he couldn’t always stick to being perfectly proper.

Affection bloomed warmly in Ji Ho’s eyes as he looked up at her sideways.

“I want the audience to clearly feel why Jong Soo fell in love with Hee Soo… But my skills don’t match my ambition, and my effort still feels lacking.”

Her small chin seemed to droop with visible sadness.

“In that case, don’t worry. It’s already all there.”

“…I know you’re just saying that to cheer me up.”

“Well, it’s actually true.”

Ji Ho uncrossed his legs.

“Remember how the writer said Jong Soo cried at the end, staring at Hee Soo’s shoes left by the front door after she left for the dorm? Because he realized he’d loved her? But for me, it’s the opposite.”

His serious tone carried quiet determination. Hye Yoon looked at Ji Ho—the kind of man who made you want to believe anything he said—and lowered her eyes gently.

“Jong Soo… must’ve loved Hee Soo from the very first day she came home. From that very first moment he saw her size-230 sneakers by the front door.”

“…At first sight?”

He placed the closed script down on the sofa beside him—as if to say, this moment was no longer within the realm of .

“Yes. Not because she was kind to him. Not because affection grew slowly over time.”

Then he slowly stood up. Realizing just how close their knees had been, Hye Yoon quickly stepped backward. When her feet stopped, she looked up—as always—to meet Ji Ho’s gaze.

Ji Ho paused, thinking. If words and eye contact weren’t enough to convey sincerity, perhaps the best way was to let their body warmth touch.

“From way over there—just like this.”

He stretched out both arms and gently held Hye Yoon’s shoulders. The warmth and softness spread from his palms through her entire body. He’d meant to convey his heart—but she felt it straight in her stomach.

“The moment we recognized each other’s existence.”

“…”

“That’s when we fell in love.”

Their eyes met in the empty set—each filled only with the other’s reflection, clear and shimmering like still water.

Hye Yoon didn’t look away, even as her heart pounded wildly. She wanted to find the true owner of this kindness—was it Jong Soo? Was it actor Ahn Ji Ho, pretending to be her fake boyfriend?

Or was it really Ahn Ji Ho, the man himself?

That tiny hope had already begun to sprout.

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead is a Divorced Husband

She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.

After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.

She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.

But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…

Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

――

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!

The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.

That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”

Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”

The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”

That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”

Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”

The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.

Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.

“She was originally a ‘she’!”

At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.

The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”

You’re bound to regret it if you skip this novel. Read the review & spoiler to find out what you might be missing!
