Sunlight pierced straight through the large window. Beams of light slipping through the iron bars illuminated the entire upper space.

It was a small room, barely enough to fit four or five people. Brienna was there, in a place only the Emperor or those with his permission could stay—one that offered a sweeping view of the entire Imperial Palace.

She wore a plain beige dress, devoid of any jewelry or ornaments. Her plump pregnant belly contrasted starkly with her unnaturally pale, bloodless face. Brienna blinked slowly.

Her dull blue eyes sought out the darkest corner of the room—somewhere untouched by the glaring light—and she sat in the shadowed part of the bed, covering her ears and silently mouthing, “Ah, ah.”

Yet she couldn’t block out the vibrations climbing up through the heels of her high shoes. The rumbling, as if tens of thousands of people stomped their feet in unison, tapped directly on the anxiety she’d tried so hard to bury.

It had started several days ago. While collecting clean rainwater through the window, Brienna blinked as she noticed the Imperial Palace gardens being lavishly decorated.

Those opulent banners were only ever hung for victory banquets. And ever since then, the Palace had been preparing for a celebration.

Compared to the temporary victory banquet Brienna herself had once overseen, this one looked far grander and more majestic—so much so that her heart sank deeply into her chest.

But soon, Brienna covered her belly as if shielding the baby’s eyes. And gently, she spoke to the Imperial Grandson inside her womb.

“Imperial Grandson. Surely, it will be His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and His Imperial Majesty the Emperor who prevail. Wait and see—the day the victory bells ring, I’ll show you your father from this very spot, where the whole Imperial Palace lies beneath us.”

Each time she said those words, Brienna felt as if thorns pricked her throat. The same sharp, scraping phrases always stabbed her from within:

Imperial Grandson. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. His Imperial Majesty the Emperor. And the Imperial Grandson’s father.

People she once considered family—yet in the end, they’d left her in this palace like bait.

But Brienna paid no mind to the fleeting pain. She shut her eyes, deliberately ignoring even the fact that Claude had abandoned her.
