It really was Alejandro.

Nerea chewed gently on the inside of her cheek. The faint sting of pain confirmed this wasn’t a dream. Right there before her stood Alejandro.

He wore all-black clothing that covered his entire body and pulled his hat low over his face to hide himself, but how could she possibly fail to recognize him?

His tall, dignified figure stood out even behind the main thoroughfare, his pitch-black eyes locking solely onto Nerea despite drawing everyone else’s attention.

His silhouette beneath the clothing seemed slightly leaner than the last time she had seen him. Had his already thin cheeks sunken in even further?

When their eyes met, Alejandro hastily averted his gaze. Seeing him feign curling inward while trying to slip backward almost made her laugh.

Nerea slowly pulled on the reins. Her horse, which had been walking at a steady pace, slowed and veered toward the side of the thoroughfare.

The war hero drew nearer. At some point, the citizens’ eyes widened in unison. Their spontaneous cheers gradually quieted down.

When she’d been addressed as Count Esteban, what had struck people most vividly were the black armor and hair glowing red as if aflame—but up close, what struck Nerea Esteban most powerfully was her own pale face and water-clear eyes that shimmered with a piercing brightness.

The citizens, who had been staring blankly at Count Esteban, erupted into shouts simultaneously.

“Count Esteban! Please come over here!”

“Come to our side too!”

Nerea paused briefly. The knights stationed along the boundary between the parade route and the streets tensed instantly. It was the exact moment when the crowd seemed to surge toward Nerea all at once.

Unfortunately, Alejandro was not among that surging throng. On the contrary, he had retreated further back. It was at that very moment his lips moved.

Still standing in place, Nerea silently mimicked the shape of Alejandro’s lips.
