The distance from the mansion where Prince Gauwe’s forces were stationed to the capital was not very far. If one rode nonstop, changing horses as needed, it would take only ten days to arrive.

But Nerea had forgotten.

The enemies she had punished were those who had tormented the people of Castarti even after the Hundred-Year War—and the corrupt faction of emperors who had nurtured those wretched vermin for their own safety.

It happened as she slipped away from the mansion and passed through the Serenten territory.

“Count Esteban! Congratulations on your victory!”

Nerea concealed her bewilderment and looked toward the crowds lining both sides of the street. People—no one knew where they’d all come from—filled the road, cheering and shouting in jubilation.

“Glory to Castarti! Blessings upon our victorious knights!”

They welcomed the returning procession by scattering the finest, most beautiful celebratory gifts they could gather—colorful flower petals and ribbons—upon the ground.

Apparently, the messengers sent ahead to announce the perfect victory had spread the news far and wide. Nerea clenched her hand as she scanned the seemingly endless throngs.

Colton Vance carried a sack of jewels, and at the tail end of the procession followed coffins containing the fallen prince of a ruined kingdom, the former emperor, and the former empress.

The captured prisoners, bound in a line, would be kept under such strict guard that they wouldn’t dare attempt even the slightest resistance.

So perhaps, amid all this celebration, Nerea could quietly slip away.

She longed to whip her reins and gallop back as fast as possible. Before her eyes, Alejandro shimmered like a mirage—appearing, then vanishing—surely waiting to greet her with as much joy as this cheering crowd.

“Thank you, Commander! We won’t have fires at night anymore, right? All those wicked arsonists are right there, aren’t they?”

But the moment bright-eyed children called out her name with beaming smiles, Nerea loosened her grip on the reins and raised her right hand.
