Inside the bathroom.

The water prepared in advance swirled with the fragrant scent of aromatic oils. The moderately warm water began slowly easing away fatigue she hadn’t even realized had built up.

But it couldn’t erase the thoughts consuming her mind. At times like this, submerging herself completely was best. Nerea took a deep breath and, out of habit, sank fully beneath the water.

When her head disappeared beneath the surface, her ears grew muffled. Her red hair floated above her like seaweed, drifting gently.

In this moment when all her senses blurred together, Nerea squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head hard. Doing so usually flushed most thoughts from her mind, scattering them into the water.

The stiff corners of her lips trembling faintly, the voice forcing a smile as if embarrassed, the deep green eyes that for a moment seemed to glint with a hint of sky-blue.

But today seemed to be an exception—evident from how the Grand Duke’s face refused to leave her thoughts.

Nerea surfaced and breathed slowly. Her soft exhale melted into the steam of the bathroom, and her wet hair clung heavily to her shoulders.

As a subtle warmth gradually cooled on her shoulders, Nerea recalled something she’d casually brushed off earlier.

Could his proposal to be her partner at the banquet today have been part of that marriage proposal? But beyond that, she couldn’t recall anything else suspicious.

If not, then perhaps it truly was a political move to join forces, just as Grace had briefly mentioned.

Nerea simply couldn’t tell. But one thing was certain.

“…I didn’t tremble.”

During the ten years in Alfern—even if she’d lived with her eyes closed, ears covered, and mouth shut—she’d still heard and seen plenty through Heather. Among those stories were, of course, Heather’s own tales of love.
