The sound of gunfire came from the woods, not far from the mansion. Laila and Eustar exchanged a glance and, as if by unspoken agreement, left the room.

When they descended toward the mansion’s backyard, another gunshot rang out. Eustar recognized it as the report of a hunting musket, while Laila could hear something flapping frantically. Clearly, someone was hunting in the woods.

“You there.”

A servant carrying a large sack, likely filled with grain, hurried over at Eustar’s call and bowed deeply.

“Who is hunting in the woods?”

The servant glanced uneasily toward the woods and bowed his head again.

“Yes, Your Highness. It’s… the young master of this house.”

“You mean the count’s son?”

“Yes, sir. Hunting is his hobby, so he’s always out there in the woods. His lordship finds it displeasing, but… the young master has such a free-spirited temperament.”

“Hunting is a common pastime—does the count dislike it?”

The servant trailed off awkwardly. Eustar sensed he was deliberately withholding something and was about to press him further when a clear, sharp voice rang out from above.
