Eustar’s expression grew even more serious. He always listened carefully to Laila’s opinions and never dismissed her words as ridiculous jokes or brushed them off with thoughtless teasing, no matter how absurd they sounded.

Because he had consistently shown such effort and attitude, even the ever-suspicious Laila could speak freely in front of Eustar.

“Go on, Laila.”

Eustar nodded as he poured a little more brandy into his glass. Laila stared into the dregs of brandy in her own glass before looking back at him.

“As I said earlier, controlling weather itself consumes a great deal of magical power or energy. I don’t know what this monster is doing with the kidnapped children, but my guess is that it probably doesn’t possess enough strength to control meteorological phenomena.”

“Instead, it senses when the weather is about to change and only acts at those times.”

Laila blinked as if confirming her own thought and continued.

“It likely knows instinctively—just like birds fly lower when rain is coming. If that’s all it’s doing, it can drastically minimize its energy consumption.”

“That’s a plausible theory. So its range of activity is wide, but its magical power isn’t particularly strong…”

“Perhaps creating illusions is the extent of this monster’s capabilities.”

“In that case, its physical strength might be its advantage.”

Monsters came in many kinds, but broadly speaking, they could be divided into those that used magic or invisible energies and those whose physical strength was dominant.

Beyond that, there were numerous other criteria—for instance, their form or composition, whether they belonged to the animal or plant kingdom, or whether they represented an entirely new type—and though classification systems were systematic, in truth, only Eustar and Olga Muuge within Tentinella truly knew them all.

After finishing his second glass of brandy, Eustar set it down and began combing his hair from the very ends, which had grown even more tangled as it dried.

Laila watched him silently from behind as he sat before the dressing table, combing his own hair, and once again felt a strange emotion ripple through her like waves.
