Eustar and Laila immediately ran to where Felix was. He, Deputy Commander Tiltil, and her squad members held up lamps to illuminate the ground.

“Look.”

As Felix stepped back, the two of them saw strange marks deeply gouged between the firs. Eustar knelt on one knee, measuring the depth and width of the grooves.

“My hand can sink in up to half a span. Something incredibly heavy was firmly pressed down and then dragged straight ahead….”

Muttering almost to himself, he shifted his gaze. Thick roots of the firs protruded from the earth, savagely torn open and exposing their inner flesh.

“It’s definitely not an ordinary beast.”

Eustar said. Laila shone her lamp in the direction the marks had moved. Initially as wide as an adult’s head, the groove gradually narrowed until it finally vanished altogether.

“What about other tracks?”

At Laila’s question, Felix shook his head with a pained expression.

“We’re still searching, but this is the only one we’ve found. I can’t understand why tracks remain only here. Given the size and weight implied, it should have toppled trees along its path without issue.”

Tiltil spoke.

“If this is indeed a monster’s trail, judging by its direction, it headed north. If you follow straight north through this fir forest, you’ll reach ‘The Land’s End.’”

Laila looked up at Eustar, then turned to Tiltil and asked,

“‘The Land’s End’? Where’s that?”

“Oh, Lady Chrisrad must be hearing of it for the first time. That’s just its nickname. To reach the capital Venalis from here, you must cross the Portguard Mountains. One of those ranges connects directly with this fir forest. However, a severed vein of the earth there formed a very deep cliff. At its base flows a small stream that eventually feeds into the Solarus River.”
