Dust billowed thickly into the air. Laila, refusing to let her guard down, stared tensely at the ground with her toes braced, her heart pounding with anxiety. The speed at which the sigil was being drawn felt unbearably slow.

Shadows, Laila thought. Beyond the swirling, dispersing cloud of dust, a shadow appeared—flattened against the earth, taut like an arrow drawn back just before release, coiled like a serpent on the verge of striking.

‘It’s coming.’

In that instant, a deafening roar swept through the deserted village like a storm. Just as Alice leaped from her spot and charged toward Laila, sharp spearheads erupted from the ashen ground the moment the sigil’s lines seamlessly interlocked.

“Aaah—!”

The spearheads twisted and intertwined, trapping Alice completely, leaving her unable to move even an inch. Her contorted body shrieking in agony resembled a giant insect drenched in insecticide.

“Let me go! Undo this—! Undo it right now—!”

Laila, eyes wide with shock, took a few steps backward.

She had succeeded in restraining Alice—but now she had no idea what to do next. Unless “it,” the entity occupying Alice’s mind and body, revealed itself willingly, Laila couldn’t perform the overlay.

“Undo it! I said undo it! You damn thing! Undo it—right now!”

With a loud clang, the prison formed of spearheads tilted sharply. It wasn’t human strength. Alice was nearly breaking free from the arcane cage—a magical prison designed to contain demons.

“Come here, you miserable wretch—!”

From between the bars, Alice’s arm shot out, unnaturally elongating with a wet snap, as if joints had popped loose, reaching to grab Laila by the throat.

At that moment, Laila caught a familiar scent mingled within the thick dust. She swiftly dodged Alice’s grasping hand and stepped back—just in time to see long platinum hair shimmering in the pale sunlight.

Was this what it felt like to meet a god in the middle of hell? For a fleeting moment, Laila felt as if she’d been granted salvation.
