Eustar suppressed the suffocating feeling welling up from within and scanned his surroundings, both hands resting on his hips. Suddenly, he untied his bound hair with a swift motion, then muttered through the strap held between his lips.

“Laila, could you check the Seeker once more?”

Laila pulled the Seeker from her pocket and examined it, but to no avail. Ever since she’d sensed something was amiss, she’d checked it every three steps—but the needle remained utterly still, not twitching even slightly.

Occasionally, it would quiver as if about to move, only to spin abruptly in a full circle and return to its original position—such odd behavior had become all too common.

Laila shook her head and said,

“It still isn’t moving.”

In the meantime, Eustar deftly gathered his long hair with practiced fingers, coiling it tightly into a neat bun and securing it firmly against the back of his head.

Seeming unsatisfied with the strap alone, he pulled a slender, pointed golden rod from his jacket pocket and firmly pinned it through the coiled hair.

Laila, who had been quietly watching Eustar fuss with his hair, spoke up.

“You look like a traveler like that.”

Eustar chuckled softly. At the sight of his smile, Laila suddenly felt her lingering unease begin to fade—was it the power of his smile, or perhaps something else…?

“Well, calling me a traveler isn’t entirely wrong, is it?”

Laila frowned slightly, like a thoughtful child, then added,

“No, I meant those wandering vagabonds. You’re not one of them, are you?”

“Hmm, practically speaking, no. But here’s the interesting part, Laila—I’ve always thought of myself as a wanderer.”
