Donovan whistled as he scrubbed off the thick grime from a large cast-iron pot.

Normally, he lived almost exclusively with his daughter Alice, so there was rarely any need to take out such a big pot—but today, with two extra people in the house, even a simple stew would be impossible to cook in a small pan.

Donovan’s face flushed red as if he’d been drinking, as he gathered dry straw and scrubbed the pot. His old friend Turs, passing by the well, saw Donovan washing the pot and teased him playfully.

“Getting remarried, are you? You seem unusually cheerful today.”

Donovan glanced up at Turs and snapped back gruffly.

“Remarry? I’d freeze to death first. Who’d be mad enough to marry an old codger counting the days till he’s in his coffin?”

Though he said that, in truth, he was in an excellent mood. After all, new faces appearing in his otherwise monotonous and quiet life were genuinely welcome.

Naturally sociable and quite lively in his youth, he felt as though a long-lost relative had returned—even if these guests would leave in just a few days.

Donovan rinsed the dust off the pot with cold water and groaned as he straightened his back. In his younger days, people had called him sturdy for his build—but time had proven too much even for him. Turs clicked his tongue, watching Donovan rub his lower back with a clenched fist.

“At this rate…”

“I won’t ask you to rub my back, so stop worrying.”

Even with Donovan’s lighthearted scolding, Turs couldn’t quite shake his worried expression.

Moreover, he seemed to have something to say, hesitating and circling around Donovan without leaving his side. Donovan paused mid-scrub, looking up at him with a puzzled expression.

“What’s wrong? Got something to say?”

“Well… not exactly…”
