Olga led Laila to a place that resembled a storage room.

To an ordinary person’s eyes, it would have seemed like a dusty, useless clutter of junk—but not to Laila.

She could smell everything in the place and understand the value of each item. This wasn’t just a storeroom. Borrowing her mother’s phrasing, it was a damn treasure trove.

Every conceivable ingredient for tinctures was piled high in the cramped space, so narrow that even two or three people moving simultaneously would have been difficult.

From the most common herbs to plants so obscure their very existence was barely known, even to dangerous insects that could kill you with a single sting.

Most of these were things Laila had only read about in books—left behind by ancient ancestors, witches—but she had every detail memorized.

She knew their effects and precisely how to use them to create either medicine or deadly poison.

“How about it?”

Olga asked. Startled out of her trance, Laila—who had been mesmerized by the shelves—turned to look at her.

“Is this enough for you?”

Enough? It was more than enough! When Laila nodded, Olga pulled an even smaller hourglass from a small pouch and placed it upside-down on the windowsill.

“You’ve got one hour. Just one hour. My knights are holding back that monster so it doesn’t attack more distant villages. But they won’t last much longer.”

“I’ll give it a try.”

Laila sprang into action immediately. Making a paralyzing tincture wasn’t difficult—she’d done it many times before.

But she’d only ever made it in small quantities, just enough to deal with dangerous wild dogs or wolves encountered while wandering in the forest. She’d used only the most basic ingredients then.
