Meanwhile, as soon as Laila stepped into the bathroom, she was rendered speechless and hesitated.

A pristine white porcelain tub supported by four golden feet brimmed with warm water, fragrant steam rising from it, dozens of glass bottles and dried flower petals scattered about, and beyond the gently curling vapor, a soft beige robe spread wide like a headless attendant…

It was a place so luxurious that any ordinary girl would have either shrieked with delight or feigned fainting—but Laila felt as though she might faint for entirely different reasons.

She was already flustered by how the servants addressed her as “young lady,” but even more absurd was the fact that she had to rely on their hands even to undress.

She had offered slight resistance, insisting she could undress herself, but they invoked a bizarre rule: “You are the Crown Prince’s guest; we must not show any lack of service.”

“Ha….”

Whether because the bathwater had been too warm, or because she’d had to stand helplessly watching strangers wash her body while clad only in a thin, nearly translucent robe, Laila emerged from the bath utterly drained, unable to lift even a finger.

The servants carried her clothes away somewhere and led her instead behind a partition that had been set up beforehand.

“What’s this? Where are my clothes?”

“Your clothes are right here.”

Hearing the familiar voice from beyond the partition, Laila lifted slightly onto her heels. The first face she saw was that of Marchioness Himiard. Beside her hung an array of dresses on a rack.

Before Laila could even properly see what they were, she shook her head.

“I can’t wear any of those.”

“Perhaps not? But conversely, you certainly can’t remain here dressed as you are.”

At the marchioness’s words, Laila looked down at herself anew. She now wore a top and skirt made of thicker, softer fabric than the thin bathrobe—but by any measure, it was still just undergarments.
