Although she clicked her tongue in exasperation, Muuge waited patiently until Eustar and Laila recovered.

“The day I first stepped through a portal comes to mind.”

Eustar said. Even he, who had grown so accustomed to spatial teleportation that his expression rarely changed, looked unusually pale today.

His stomach felt as though he’d swallowed a stone, heavy and sinking, while his heart pounded erratically with unease.

Muuge shrugged her shoulders, as if such a reaction were only natural.

“I told you, didn’t I? Since you aren’t mages, merely entering would be difficult. Honestly, I should probably commend you—it’s impressive you got off this lightly.”

“It felt as if my whole body was being torn apart, piece by piece.”

Laila said. She repeatedly clenched and uncurled her fingers, as if to reassure herself her hands were still intact, then continued.

“There are portals like this?”

“The portal in Tentinella was modeled directly after this one. The portals we use allow rapid travel through physical space, but this one moves you through conceptual space. Naturally, the side effects are either similar or even worse.”

Though Muuge explained clearly enough, Eustar and Laila, both clutching their stomachs and covering their mouths while trying to catch their breath, couldn’t even hear her words.

Only after a long while did they finally regain their senses and slowly lift their heads to take in the city’s scenery once more. Before their very eyes, scenes so unbelievable unfolded as if they were perfectly ordinary.

It hadn’t been unreasonable at all to think, upon first seeing the city, that it resembled a massive mine. Jet-black buildings with jagged tips stood arranged as though completely ignoring the laws of physics.

Some structures clung to or intertwined with one another, while others floated entirely in midair. Still others leaned precariously, as if about to topple over at any moment.

“How is this possible?” Laila murmured, simultaneously awestruck and astonished by the sight she’d never seen before.
