Eustar silently notched an arrow onto his recurve bow. The deer was still obliviously chewing tender leaves, its head buried deep in the thick underbrush.

‘One shot.’

He raised the bow, held his breath, and narrowed his eyes. His vision wavered in the dim shade… then locked onto a single point. At that instant, the arrow shot forward with a sharp, ringing hiss.

“Keeek!”

With a brief, guttural cry, the deer collapsed heavily onto the ground. Eustar pulled the arrow clean through its long neck—the precise killing spot—and blood began to flow.

He would carry it back, strip off the hide, slice out the edible portions, and roast them over a fire. He took a rope from his leather pouch, roughly tied the deer’s legs together, then glanced around.

“Laila!”

A flurry of flapping and rustling erupted at once—the sound of small animals fleeing in alarm at his sudden shout.

“Laila, where are you?”

Eustar, who had been about to lift the deer, stood up uneasily.

The forest had grown darker in just a moment, and utterly still. Even the rustling sounds of tiny creatures like rabbits or mice had vanished, leaving a silence as deep as if he were inside a tomb.

“Laila!”

Anxiety crept into Eustar’s voice. Leaving the bleeding deer where it lay, he stomped through the bushes toward the spot where Laila had disappeared.

Before he could even take ten steps, he heard rustling behind a tree—and the sound of water bubbling up.

“Laila.”
