Meanwhile, Eustar, Laila, and Muuge pressed onward toward the city of mages, undeterred by the worsening weather and increasingly treacherous path.

“There lies the ‘Lake of the Lost.’”

Muuge pointed toward the heavily fog-shrouded distance and spoke. Laila halted, squinting as she gazed in the direction Muuge indicated.

Beyond the murky veil—like a sky weighed down by storm clouds—lay barren, withered land, and beyond that stretched a vast, dark expanse of water.

“Damp, indeed.”

Eustar muttered, glancing upward at the sky.

“There’s hardly any sunlight.”

Muuge gave a faint, dry laugh.

“Of course there isn’t. The lake’s ominous dampness blankets this entire area. Even the distinction between day and night has grown hazy.”

“Is it like this inside the city too?”

Eustar asked. Without turning to look at him, Muuge kept walking steadily as she replied.

“The city is entirely different. Think of it as a space slightly removed from the reality you know. Had the city’s barrier not been so tightly sealed, this region wouldn’t have become so toxic. All energy needs to flow naturally to purify, but the mages isolated the city and trapped the energy inside, disrupting the natural flow here. And even without that, a body of water this size tends to attract unpleasant entities.”

When they first left Branch Two and set out for the city of mages, monsters had been scattered everywhere. They’d even dealt with a couple of minor rifts.

Yet as they drew closer to the lake, the number of monsters seemed to dwindle—until now, nothing living could be seen at all.

They alone pushed forward through the murky fog and darkness that resembled rising ash.
