Her furrowed eyelids parted slightly. Her vision was hazy and unfocused, but she could see strands of long, platinum hair spilling downward. She also saw a neat hand lightly resting on the sheets, as if reaching toward her.

“Why do you think that, Laila?”

Soft, Laila thought. Such a soft voice. If only she could touch his voice—she imagined it would feel as warm and comforting as running fingers through a fledgling bird’s downy feathers.

“You shouldn’t be here. I sent you away.”

Laila’s eyelids, fluttering as if about to open, slowly closed again. Eustar rose from his chair and leaned over her on the bed. When their faces drew close, his faint breath tickled her skin like a delicate feather.
