The palace was filled with busy, urgent whispers.

Eustar lay half-conscious, buried in the midst of those murmurs. His whole body grew languid as if listening to gentle ripples in his ears, or the sound of rain striking dry earth—only to occasionally jerk in alarm.

—I must open my eyes, Eustar thought. But his eyelids refused to obey. And it wasn’t just his eyelids—his fingers, even his lips, felt weighted down like stones, utterly immobile.

—But you must open your eyes.

—Open them.

Eustar opened his eyes.

Someone was shouting beside him, but the voice sounded distant.

The first thing he realized upon opening his eyes was a sharp, salty bitterness coating his tongue and the inside of his lips—the lingering aftereffect of a fainting spell that had forcibly stolen his consciousness.

“Your Highness!”

As if water suddenly draining from his ears, a loud voice jolted through his head, and Eustar’s body shot upward as though flung by a spring.

He looked around with disbelieving eyes.

It was his own bedroom. Servants stared at him with wide, startled eyes like frightened rabbits. Turning toward the source of a faint, fragrant perfume, he saw Marchioness Himiard.

Himiard stared back at him with an expression no different from the servants’. The moment Eustar tried to move, she gently pressed down on his shoulder.

“Your Highness, you must not get up. You need to rest.”

Eustar’s lips parted numbly. His eyes drifted dazedly, still failing to grasp the situation.
