Eustar, who had been staring down at her in silence, twitched the corners of his mouth as if smiling, yet not quite.

“Are you angry?”

Laila’s lips trembled. A chill ran through her entire body.

People screamed and gagged.

The village guards, arriving belatedly, hurriedly covered the man’s pulverized corpse, but blood kept seeping into the ground, flowing like a river until it seeped into the stream cutting through the village.

Amid all that noise, Laila closed her eyes for a moment. She often did this when her mind grew tangled, but this time it offered no calm—instead, the sounds she least wanted to hear became even sharper.

“Are you angry, Laila?”

Laila opened her eyes and looked up at him from beneath her hood.

“It’s not anger. I just… couldn’t accept your way of doing things.”

The guards began glancing curiously at the two of them. Eustar flashed them a quick grin and, with natural ease, took Laila by the hand.

At that moment, Laila felt both the urge to shake off Eustar’s hand and the desire to grip it more tightly. It was as if her own desires had split in two.

“Whether you accept it or not… that man was already a fading spirit. You saw it yourself, didn’t you? If we’d left him like that, he’d have clung to that spot and harmed innocent people.”

“I know that. But you… you could have just erased him, couldn’t you? Just like you did in Rijicus.”

Eustar nodded lightly.

“I could have.”

“Then why didn’t you? You forced his soul into that red-haired man, didn’t you? Are you really capable of doing that? But you said you’re not a medium.”

“I’m not a medium. But I can do things like that.”

When they turned into the deserted alley leading to the inn, Laila shook off Eustar’s hand.

She glanced around, removed her hood, and shook out her tangled hair. Her pair of red eyes fixed him with a piercing stare.

“How can you do that? Is it through the power of a magical artifact?”

“No, this is… a power I possess. To be precise, it’s a power someone has lent me.”

For an instant, Laila recalled the black smoke rippling just beyond his shoulders. What had that been? Was it the “someone” Eustar spoke of? Or was it his own power?

Her head throbbed with the flood of questions that followed. She took a deep breath and spoke.

“You really are human, aren’t you?”

Eustar smiled. That smile once again broke through Laila’s defenses, regardless of her will. Something within him seemed to flow into her heart, whispering that there was no need to worry.

“Don’t worry, Laila. No matter what anyone says, I’m the same as you. We’re alike.”

Laila gave a faint, dry laugh.

“Ordinary people wouldn’t speak to a real witch like that.”

“I’m not exactly ordinary. Anyway, that’s why I can do things similar to mediums even though I’m not one. But I’m nowhere near a true medium—that’s precisely why I need you.”

Laila, arms crossed and nibbling her lips, finally sighed as if giving in. A gust of wind from beyond the alley swept through Eustar’s long hair.

“Well then, shall we go, Miss Witch? We still have one more thing we promised to do. I won’t stop you if you want to explore the village more, but it seems there are quite a few things wandering about similar to what we just saw.”

Laila didn’t need him scaring her like that—she already detested crowded streets. She pulled her hood back over her head and started walking toward Madam Nollen’s inn.

[This is the timeline separator]

True to her word, Madam Nollen had cleaned the problematic room.

It wasn’t as spotless as the other guest rooms, but at least most of the dust was gone, and the sheets were fresh. Though cobwebs still clung to a corner of the ceiling, the spider itself was nowhere to be seen.

As soon as Eustar closed the door, Laila immediately removed her hood.

Her short black hair, just barely brushing her shoulders, swayed faintly, its reflection blurred in the cloudy mirror. Though barely visible, facing her own face so closely in that manner felt strangely unsettling.

Just then, Eustar’s figure suddenly appeared over her shoulder in the mirror. Seeing them standing side by side made her acutely aware once more of how tall he was.

He stood nearly a head taller than Laila, with broad shoulders. Yet clad in his well-fitted uniform, he looked agile rather than bulky.

“Aren’t you going to say anything about sharing a room with me?”

Laila glanced at Eustar’s hand resting lightly on her shoulder and realized—she hadn’t even thought about that fact.

“Should I be worried?”

She asked. In that instant, was it her imagination? Eustar’s face in the mirror looked for a moment like someone else’s.

It wasn’t a complete transformation—just as if another face had brushed over his own like a sheer veil. A hauntingly sensual visage that made her chest tighten.

“Should I be the one worried?”

When she repeated the same question, Eustar, who had been silent, suddenly burst into laughter. The shadow of that other presence on his face vanished without a trace, as though made of sugar glass shattering.

“No, you don’t need to worry at all. I promise—if I ever try to do anything, you have my full permission to dry out my tongue completely.”

“But you said that requires Tincture.”

Laila swatted his hand away and frowned. “Ah…”

“What’s wrong?”

Eustar asked gently.

“It’s about the Tincture. There was something like a note my mother left behind, and all the ingredients… even the hard-to-find ones were at home. I’ve lost all of it.”

She waited for him to say something, but her expectation was misplaced. Without her noticing, Eustar had stepped back a pace and turned his head slightly toward his shoulder, wearing a faintly odd expression.

“Eustar.”

Laila called his name. Instantly, his brows knotted sharply, and Laila froze in surprise, her fists clenching tightly.

But it didn’t last long.

He didn’t suddenly lunge at her or snarl like a beast. Instead, he turned his head as if nothing had happened and offered a practiced smile.

“Sorry. I was just lost in thought for a moment. What did you say?”

Laila’s large eyes blinked slowly. She tried to detect anything strange about Eustar, but found nothing. His aura was clear, and his demeanor unchanged from moments before.

“Our house burned down… and all the precious ingredients—the ones needed to make Tincture—are gone.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. We can always get more.”

“You don’t even know what ingredients they are.”

Eustar nodded as if conceding the point, but showed no sign of retracting his statement.

“That’s true. But whatever you’re looking for, I’m certain I can find it all. Trust me. By the way, I hate to be rude in front of a lady, but may I lie down on the bed? I’m finally starting to feel tired.”

Before Laila could reply, he plopped down onto the narrow bed and took off his jacket.

He removed the waistcoat underneath as well and undid a couple of buttons on his shirt. Beneath the collarbone, a large scar was visible—likely stretching at least across his chest, possibly even down to his abdomen.

Tossing his clothes onto the back of a worn chair, Eustar leaned back. The freshly changed sheets were clean, though they carried no pleasant scent—probably pulled from a drawer where they’d been stored for a long time.

Letting out a long sigh, Eustar covered his eyes with his forearm and spoke.

“Madam Nollen mentioned earlier… that several people have already died in this room.”

“Yes. That’s what she said.”

“What do you think, Laila? What could that ‘evil thing’ Madam Nollen mentioned possibly be?”

Laila shrugged, as if she had no idea.

“Could it be something like what we saw earlier?”

“Probably. And it’s likely something far older that’s been clinging here… which would mean someone died in this inn, but Madam Nollen didn’t mention that. She clearly won’t tell us what really happened, even if we ask.”

In that instant, red specks flickered before Laila’s eyes. But as soon as she frowned and rubbed her eyes, they vanished.

“Laila?”

“Sorry, something must have gotten in my eye. Um… do you think Madam Nollen… might be involved in this strange affair?”

“I suspect there’s a good chance of that.”

“But Madam Nollen is still alive. Which means… whatever is here can’t leave this place. And right now, I don’t sense anything at all. Truly. Some entities only appear under certain conditions or at specific times—this might be that kind.”

Eustar tapped the space beside him on the bed with the back of his hand, wearing the expression a professor might have when regarding a clever student.

Laila stared at him for a moment, then, without resistance, sat down beside him. Now that she was seated, she realized the bed wasn’t very wide. She had a strong feeling tonight wouldn’t be a comfortable one.

“Don’t worry. You have special eyes, and as long as you have them, I can handle whatever comes. Anything at all, Laila.”

“The power you mentioned earlier—the one someone lent you—does that include granting someone eyes like mine?”

At Laila’s question, Eustar briefly curled his lips into a cynical smile.

“No, it doesn’t. But I don’t want to use that method. The being lending me power isn’t offering it for free. Whenever I receive something, it always takes something in return. Borrowing enough power to ‘overlay’ like that would be too great a burden—even for me.”

“Tell me what that being is.”

But Eustar slowly shook his head.

“It’s too soon. Much too soon. I can’t tell you that, Laila—not until you know a bit more about me.”
