Laila instantly recalled the strange magical device Eustar had used in the village of Ridgecus.

That thing that moved as fast as flying… But hadn’t he said something about it needing to be recharged, or something along those lines? If he’d had it, they wouldn’t have needed to walk for half a day in the first place.

It took her less than a few seconds to realize he wasn’t using the device. Laila was startled to find herself dangling helplessly in his arms as Eustar pushed through the crowd at top speed.

“Eustar, you can’t just drop me like this!”

Laila cried out. Such behavior would only draw the ghost’s attention.

Turning her head, she gritted her teeth as she saw the man’s spirit chasing them at an unbelievable speed. One of his legs was almost entirely rotted away and barely visible, yet he stomped determinedly toward them, staggering heavily.

“Eustar!”

“I know, Laila. Don’t worry—I’m not just running away blindly.”

Holding Laila in his arms, he skillfully leaped across the narrow stalls.

For a moment, her body floated in midair, and Laila instinctively clutched tightly onto his collar. When they reached a slightly less crowded spot, Eustar hoisted Laila onto his shoulder with one hand and rummaged through his pockets.

“Just a moment—please hold on a bit longer.”

I really hate this position, Laila thought. Being slung over his shoulder like baggage was unpleasant enough, but worst of all was that she couldn’t look away from the ghost looming right in front of her.

From his mouth—so widely agape it would have dislocated a living person’s jaw—rotten fish plopped down with wet thuds.

“There we go. Just hold on a little longer.”

Eustar swiftly swung Laila from over his shoulder back into his arms, facing forward. Laila noticed the monocle in his right eye.

“That monocle…”

“This will work better.”

Eustar spun around and darted into an alleyway, setting Laila down.

Immediately, the squelching sound drew closer, and the man appeared before them with his mouth gaping wide. Whether his arms had stretched during the chase or had always been that way, they now hung so long they nearly brushed the ground.

“Laila, don’t close your eyes. Look straight ahead. I can only see clearly if you see clearly.”

A creaking sound echoed—the noise made as the man lifted his arm. He whipped it like a lash, and Eustar swiftly pulled Laila into his arms, leaping backward out of the way.

“So… all I need to do is just watch?”

“Yes, exactly. Don’t close your eyes. Watch and listen. You’ve done it before—you can do it again.”

She saw the damp, pale hand dragging across the ground after striking it. It looked just like layers of shed snake skin moving on their own.

Laila fought down the rising nausea in her stomach and stared straight at the man. A low buzzing filled her ears, and she also heard the sharp whoosh of something slicing through the air.

—He killed me! He killed me! That bastard killed me!

Laila realized this voice belonged to the half-decomposed figure before her—the voice he’d had in life. He was consumed by rage; nothing else could be felt beyond his fury and despair.

This is dangerous, Laila thought, struggling to relax her rigid body tensed from anxiety.

Some ghosts retained a shred of reason, but others did not. Among those without reason, the most perilous were those engulfed in wrath. There must have been a tragic story behind this man’s death—it wasn’t just a simple accident….

“Can you perform an ‘overlay,’ Laila?”

Eustar’s whisper echoed beside her ear. She briefly noted how close he was, but in this situation, knowing he stood directly behind her was her only comfort.

“You mean I should look into that man’s memories? Like with Vin?”

“Yes, exactly. You know that even beings existing only as souls have a ‘core,’ right?”

Biting her lower lip uncertainly, Laila gave a hesitant nod.

“I know.”

“Only a medium like you can see that core. With this monocle and your power, I can see him clearly—but I can’t look into his core. I’m not a medium. I’ll explain it properly later.”

“Why do I have to look at that ‘core’?”

She turned her head and asked defiantly. She didn’t know what exactly this “core” was, but she certainly had no desire to see it. It wasn’t as if some pleasant circus performance would unfold inside it.

Eustar spoke calmly.

“Because once you understand what the core is, it becomes far easier to capture him.”

Capture. Laila silently repeated the word in her mind. Was he referring to how he’d gathered and dispelled the children’s spirits back in Ridgecus? But still….

“Alright. I’ll try.”

Nodding, Laila lifted her gaze and stared straight at the man.

Something black gurgled up from his mouth, sliding down his nearly detached jaw and his body, now decayed into tattered rags, and pooling thickly on the ground.

—He killed me! He killed me! That bastard killed me!

Laila focused all her attention on his voice, his single remaining eye, and his gaping mouth. She could feel the ghost’s presence growing stronger.

Laila acknowledging the ghost and calling it forth was much like suddenly noticing a stain she’d never realized was there.

When you don’t notice a stain, no matter how large or obvious, you can pass by it without a care.

But once your eyes catch it, you can’t look away afterward—and even when you try to avert your gaze, it feels as if the stain keeps growing larger….

Now Laila was staring so intently at the stain that she moved closer to it, wanting to reach out and touch it to understand how it came to be.

—He killed me! Do you hear me? He killed me! That bastard!

Something black erupted from the man’s mouth. A sharp stench of blood filled the air, and a vivid scene flashed clearly into Laila’s mind.

The buzzing grew louder, and although no voices could be heard, she saw two men. They sat on a rock, fishing. No one else was around….

This must have been their secret spot, Laila thought. The two men had different hair colors—one red-haired, the other blond.

As Laila blinked, the red-haired man snatched the fishing rod from the blond, then kicked the blond man’s knee with his heavy boot.

The water was deep—but not deep enough to prevent escape. The blond man could have survived, had he not struck his head against the rock as he fell.

A sharp cry echoed. At that exact moment, Laila was ejected from the man’s memory. She felt the despair of that head hitting the rock—the betrayal sensed at the razor-thin boundary between life and death.

That was the man’s core.

“You did very well, Laila.”

Eustar whispered. At the same moment, Laila’s body swayed, and Eustar drew his glowing blue right hand toward his chest, then swept it sideways. Anyone who saw him would surely have thought him a handsome magician.

“Adiac asks: ‘Do you bear sin?’ Answer: ‘The sin belongs not to me but to another.’ Behold, my hands are as clean as Havashuka’s.”

The man’s waist arched sharply backward as he vomited a torrent of black liquid—Laila knew it contained every rot and his obsession.

His head slammed loudly against the ground, and ragged fish carcasses burst from his gaping mouth, scattering in every direction.

Eustar raised his voice. His right hand, now nearly invisible within the bluish glow, radiated power.

“Adiac asks: ‘Do you bear sin?’ Bow your head and answer: ‘The sin belongs not to me but to another.’ Behold, my hands are clean!”

An ear-splitting shriek pierced the air—so loud and sharp that everyone in the small village must have heard it. The man’s spirit, thrashing with his body bent backward, shot off with a whooshing sound into the distance.

Laila’s eyes widened in astonishment. She looked at Eustar’s hand, its glow now gone. Resting on his palm was a large, transparent glass orb.

Inside the orb was pure water, yet no matter how the orb moved, the water never tilted or rippled—an eerie sight.

“You banished him?”

Laila asked. Eustar carefully placed the orb into his leather bag and checked her expression.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine! But why didn’t you capture him? In Ridgecus, you…”

“Ah, back there I needed to perform an exorcism. But this man… well, I figured an exorcism wasn’t strictly necessary.”

“Why’s that…”

Just then—

“Aaah! What is this! What’s wrong with this guy!”

“Stop him! Stop him! What are you doing! He’s gonna die!”

Shouts and commotion erupted from outside the alley. As Laila instinctively tried to rush out, Eustar grabbed her wrist.

“You’d better not look.”

He did this, Laila realized. A scream rang out, and she saw several people running away. Whatever had happened around the corner, it was Eustar’s doing.

“I think I should look.”

“It’s not a pleasant sight.”

“I don’t care. I’ve never seen anything pleasant in my life anyway.”

For a fleeting instant, a faint smile crossed Eustar’s eyes before vanishing. Was it pity? Either way, it didn’t matter right now….

He pulled Laila’s hood back over her head and, shielding her shoulder, guided her out of the alley.

As soon as they rounded the corner, a thick smell of blood hit them. The moment Laila clapped a hand over her mouth and nose, a blood-soaked man slammed his head hard against a solid wall—thud!

“Good heavens!”

People screamed. Crimson blood streamed across the entire ground like a river. The man died with his eyes wide open, staring directly at Laila. Inside his completely shattered skull, something grayish and lump-like was visible.

“This man… could it be…”

Laila’s voice trembled.

He was the very same red-haired man from the dead man’s memories. Though his face was crushed and covered in blood, barely recognizable, she knew without a doubt.

Eustar spoke.

“I set a destination for him. Now that he’s avenged himself, he won’t appear again.”

Laila turned away in disbelief, shaking off Eustar’s hand. Her eyes, looking up at him, were filled with bewildered anger.

Ex-husband Wants Reconciliation

One-line summary: Chasing the wife to the crematorium (making an effort to attract someone who has become indifferent), the female lead doesn’t look back, the second male lead takes the position.

Intro:

To repay the kindness of the older generation, Su Mu crossed into a female-dominated world and became a live-in daughter-in-law of the Yan family, single-handedly saving the Yan family from fire and water.

But her husband, Yan Jiyue, the eldest son of the Yan family, treated her with sarcasm and never showed her a good face.

It wasn’t until after Su Mu’s death that this pampered and arrogant young master shed a few fake tears and pretended to want to die for love.

This life’s kindness was enough. If there was a next life, she would definitely kick Yan Jiyue away.

Who knew that the heavens would be so kind as to allow her to be reborn, returning to the time when she had just married into the Yan family.

Su Mu glanced at the Yan eldest son, who still spoke coldly to her, and threw a divorce letter in front of him.

“Let’s divorce!”

***

Yan Jiyue never imagined that he would be reborn. He happily went to find Su Mu, wanting to make up for the mistakes he had made in his ignorant youth.

Wasn’t the reason the heavens allowed him to be reborn to let him reconcile with Su Mu?

But when he pushed open the door to Su Mu’s room, the person lying on the bed was another man.

Su Mu’s personal attendant, Xie Yi.

Yan Jiyue hated him so much that his teeth itched. In front of Su Mu, Xie Yi was a gentle and considerate whisperer of sweet nothings, but in reality, he was vicious-hearted and deliberately sabotaged their husband and wife relationship.

In the previous life, it was he who secretly hid in Su Mu’s coffin and committed suicide, stealing a step ahead of him to be buried with Su Mu.

Yan Jiyue’s eyes were filled with hatred as he cursed, “What kind of thing are you? Your background is lowly, what right do you have to occupy Su Mu?”

Xie Yi looked at the sleeping Su Mu and no longer pretended to be a whisperer of sweet nothings.

He proudly stuck out his belly, “I have the right because my belly is capable of giving the Wife-master a daughter.”

***

Yan Jiyue was consumed with jealousy. He spread rumors that Xie Yi had once been branded with the mark of a “harlot” on his chest.

But on the night Xie Yi cut off the flesh bearing that mark, Su Mu suddenly realized something was amiss.

“How did you know the exact moment I was poisoned? And why did you show up a month early?”

Xie Yi remained silent, blood from his wound soaking through his robes. His sapphire eyes brimmed with anguish – or was it just a flawless act?

Between a once-arrogant husband now seeking redemption, and a gentle soul willing to die for her – who truly held the darkest secrets? And could it be that Su Mu and Yan Jiyue weren’t the only ones given a second chance at life…?
