I glanced at Roger sitting in front of me, then immediately looked away from his sharp glare.

Roger had turned his chair backward and rested his chin on the backrest. What was frightening wasn’t just his piercing gaze—he’d immediately strike my body with the bow he held whenever my posture looked awkward.

Even now.

“It hurts!”

Unable to hold back any longer, I blurted out in a disgruntled voice, and Roger instantly frowned. Goodness. The gentleness he’d shown when first teaching me violin was nowhere to be seen.

Unlike back then, when he patiently guided me step by step, now it felt as if a tiger of an instructor stood before me.

I’d been completely fooled.

“Poor posture.”

“……!”

“You keep pressing the wrong spot.”

“…….”

When Roger pointed it out, I was left speechless. His claim that I had no talent for violin was one hundred percent true. My posture still felt unnatural, and despite merely needing to press a single string, I kept hitting the wrong place.

An even bigger issue was that even when I produced a sound by pressing the wrong spot, I couldn’t tell it was wrong. Meanwhile, Roger seemed born with perfect pitch—he corrected even the slightest deviation in tone instantly. Moreover, Roger was an extreme perfectionist.

He also had an impressively short temper, snapping at the slightest mistake.

“Lise.”

“Yes, yes. I’m sorry. I’ll start over from the beginning.”

Our clashing personalities made things even worse. The more familiar Roger became with me, the more freely he revealed his previously hidden eccentricities.

“I already told you—it’s not there, Lise.”

“I see. I’ll try again.”

I gathered my courage and played another note, and as always, Roger’s sigh followed immediately. I, too, was slowly growing angry and frustrated, wanting to put down the violin I held.

‘This darn violin!’

The violin was far more finicky than I’d imagined—even the slightest misplacement produced a strange sound. Sometimes I wondered if people with larger fingers simply couldn’t play the violin at all.

Roger had stuck markers on the strings to help me find the right positions, yet I still struggled to hit the correct notes accurately.

I was just about to drop the bow, my patience at its limit.

“Children, I brought snacks. Eat and then continue.”

Right on cue, Mrs. Bacchus quietly entered, carrying a plate of macarons. Last week she’d given us homemade sweets, and judging by the slight warmth, she’d made these herself as well.

Overjoyed, I carefully set down my violin and bow even before Roger could say a word. Roger, too, stopped nitpicking at my hard work.

“How’s the practice going?”

“Yes. It’s going perfectly well.”

Roger’s robotic reply left me speechless. Of course he’d act like a mama’s boy.

When had he last scolded me? Now he claimed everything was progressing smoothly.

‘So that’s what “going well” means, teacher.’

As I looked at Roger, he nudged my waist with his elbow. I nearly dropped the macaron in my hand because of it. But since Mrs. Bacchus was present, I couldn’t argue with him—so I just shot him a quick glare.

“How about you, Lise? It’s been two weeks now—do you find it fun?”

Mrs. Bacchus asked me.

“Yes, it’s very enjoyable.”

But I wasn’t so easily outdone. With a natural smile, I told a white lie.

This time, Roger looked at me suspiciously. I secretly jabbed his waist with my elbow, just as he’d done to me. Unlike me, Roger couldn’t hold back and immediately dropped his macaron onto the floor. The outer shell of the macaron Mrs. Bacchus had so carefully made cracked slightly.

“Oh dear, Roger! Be more careful!”

“I-I’m sorry, Mother.”

As Roger picked up the macaron, he glanced at me once.

“I’d love for you two to play a duet someday. Isabelle would be delighted.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Possible?”

“Lise’s skill isn’t quite… up to duetting with me yet.”

Roger spoke sincerely. Annoyed by his bluntness, I almost jabbed his side again—but held back.

“I’ll work very hard, Mrs. Bacchus.”

“Good. Oh, I’ve been interrupting too much, haven’t I? I’ll leave now—keep practicing.”

Mrs. Bacchus said this and immediately stepped out of the room.

Once only Roger and I remained, we glared at each other without a word.

“With that skill, do you really think you can duet with me in this lifetime?”

“Hmph, then we’ll do it in the next life. I’ve already lived through one life’s end—why wouldn’t there be a next one?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but you won’t manage it even in your next-next life.”

“Have you ever been hit with a violin bow?”

This brat had just stirred my competitive spirit.

“I’ve never been hit, but you’d better be careful yourself. If you swing it carelessly, you might just get hit right back.”

“You mama’s boy.”

“Mama’s boy? What’s that mean?”

Roger asked.

“It means you and Mrs. Bacchus get along way too well.”

“That doesn’t sound quite right… but I guess we do get along well.”

Yes, and I’m truly envious of how well you get along!

After exchanging a few words, Roger and I resumed practicing. Talent might be important, but effort could overcome anything. I intended to practice every day until I made Roger’s jaw drop in astonishment.

With that resolve, I studied diligently.

[This is the timeline separator]

I slumped in the carriage. Roger had some errand, so unlike usual, I’d practiced for only about an hour—but I was utterly drained. Probably because I’d kept arguing with Roger during violin practice.

‘What should I do once I get back to the mansion?’

If I lie down, Isabelle will scold me for being lazy and slow… If I read a book, she’ll have something to say again… If I play chess, she’ll immediately put it away…

I’ll probably just clean up after Swell or Silke, and by evening, get dragged around by Felicia and Bernard when they return from school.

‘Bernard’s the same age as Yurick—why are their behaviors so different?’

I kept wishing Bernard, the second son, would take after Yurick just a little. If that was too much to ask, I hoped Rodney Marceau, the eldest who stayed at boarding school, would come home soon. He had a bit of a willful streak too, but among the siblings, he understood me best.

‘I just don’t want to go back to the mansion.’

Since I’d finished an hour early, I thought I might as well slack off a bit.

That thought quickly turned into a plan—and I carried it out immediately. As soon as the carriage reached the village where the Marceau estate stood, I got off.

“Miss! You’ll get scolded by Madam again if you sneak off like this!”

“When have I ever not been scolded? Go ahead to the mansion first—and don’t say a word about me!”

After sending the carriage back, I hurried toward the library. Maybe I’d run into Yurick there.

I spotted the marketplace—the shortcut to the library. Hosha Village’s market was famously large and always bustling with people, but bypassing it meant walking halfway around the village to reach my destination.

Carrying my violin case on my back, I passed by “The Mermaid’s Tears.” As I did, my eyes briefly met Master’s, who was tidying the shop’s curtains.

“…….”

“…….”

Unlike me, who just stared blankly, Master gave an awkward smile and immediately looked away. Then, without finishing the curtain she’d been adjusting, she turned back into the shop.

How prickly.

I resumed walking. I tried to move carefully to protect my violin case, but kept bumping shoulders with passersby. My steps felt unsteady.

If I’d known this would happen, I should’ve walked the long way. At this rate, I’ll fall and dirty my dress.

‘Don’t fall. Don’t fall…!’

“Ah!”

Just as I feared, I fell. I toppled forward instead of backward, so I managed to protect my violin—but my palms stung, probably scraped raw. Isabelle will surely scold me again if she sees my scraped hands…

“I’m sorry, child. Are you all right?”

The person who bumped into me, flustered, helped me up. First, I checked that my violin was unharmed, then brushed the dirt off my dress.

“I’m sorry. I couldn’t see well ahead.”

“It’s all right.”

I looked up and saw the face of the man who’d fallen with me. His neat, tidy attire clearly marked him as nobility. Yet his face was hidden beneath a firmly pressed-down hat, and a scarf covered his mouth entirely.

‘No wonder you couldn’t see well.’

He also looked somewhat suspicious.

“Are you really all right? Your hands are all scraped.”

“It’s nothing at all.”

“I’m sorry… huh?”

The man examining my hands lifted his head and looked at me. Instantly, his expression changed as if he’d just met his long-lost daughter.

“…You!”

“Yes?”

Did he know me? But aside from Mrs. Bacchus and Madame Fenton, I had no acquaintance with other nobles.

“What are you doing here?”

A voice came from behind the middle-aged man—apparently, he had a companion. As soon as that companion appeared, my movements froze momentarily. That man, with silver hair and violet eyes just like Yurick’s, was unmistakably someone I knew.

“Oh, Aimar.”

“…What’s going on?”

“Oh, I just happened to trip with this child.”

Hearing that name confirmed it—he was indeed Duke Fenton of House Fenton.

Why was he at the marketplace at such an early hour? Shouldn’t he be working at his trading company in the capital?

While I stood flustered, the Duke also noticed me.

“…You look familiar.”

“Oh, hello. I’m Lise Marceau.”

After hesitating, I finally greeted him. The Duke showed no expression beyond mild surprise, as if my presence wasn’t particularly welcome.

“Yes, nice to meet you.”

“……”

“But have you finished browsing the market? I’m starting to get tired.”

Duke Fenton was indifferent toward me—and understandably so. My Father’s relationship with Duke Fenton was famously poor.

Worried the atmosphere might grow awkward, I tried to slip away. My priority was washing my dirty hands in the nearby river.

Just as I quietly moved to leave, someone grabbed my shoulder.

“Wait a moment! That child!”

“…?”

It was the man who’d bumped into me.

“I told you I was right! One of the Marceau children! That’s the one, that’s the one!”

What had I done? Had I unknowingly made a mistake? Terrified, I stood frozen—yet the man beamed at me with unmistakable delight.

“That child? She’s only ten years old, Kito.”

“Exactly! No doubt about it! Aimar!”

I flinched at the familiar name. Kito—surely… Baron Kito?

He was the one who’d sent me a letter. And a well-known public figure, at that. Shocked, I stood there dumbly, forgetting even the sting of my scraped hands.

“Did you say your name is Lise?”

“…Yes.”

“I’m suddenly very sorry. Truth is, I sent a letter to House Marceau to find you, but never received a reply. So I assumed you must belong to another family, not the Marceaus. I’ve been searching for you ever since.”

He slightly lowered his scarf and gave me a gentle smile. Only then did I see his kind face and the tufts of gray hair sticking out. I recalled his portrait from a newspaper I’d seen once.

Worried someone might recognize him, he quickly pulled the scarf back up to cover his mouth.

“Why didn’t you reply?”

“Oh… I never saw it.”

Still dazed, I answered. As for the letter—I’d taken it to the garden to read secretly from Isabelle, but lost it there.

“I see. The letter must’ve gone astray.”

“…But why did you send me a letter in the first place?”

I was curious.

“It’s far too noisy here. Shall we go to the square and talk?”

“Huh?”

“Please spare me just a moment, Lise—for all the trouble I’ve gone through to find you.”

At Baron Kito’s words, Duke Fenton, standing nearby, muttered a remark.

“You really are stubborn as a mule.”

Chapter 150 Chapter 149

Male lead is a clingy little husband

One-line summary: The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

Introduction:

One day, Lu Yuner’s soul transmigrates into a female-dominant world. She enters the Imperial Academy and takes up the position of a doctoral instructor, teaching classes and grading schoolwork.

One day, she encounters the young prince Su Qingwan secretly skipping class from the male academy.

As a result, Su Qingwan is punished.

From then on, Su Qingwan sees Lu Yuner as a “thorn in his side”.

But before long, this “thorn” becomes the person he cherishes most, and he goes to great lengths to win Lu Yuner’s affection.

Mini scene 1:

One day, the sun is high in the sky but Su Qingwan still hasn’t gotten up for class.

Servant Xiaoyuan: “Young prince, it’s time for class. You’ll be late otherwise.”

Su Qingwan says arrogantly: “I’m not going. I am the esteemed prince, my status is so noble, why should I suffer this hardship? Besides, isn’t learning all this just to please women? Hmph, they’re not worthy!”

Mini scene 2:

After Su Qingwan falls for someone, he completely changes. He no longer skips class and diligently learns how to be a good husband and father. But he discovers that Sister Yuner is always surrounded by admirers.

Drunk and overcome with jealousy one day, he clings to Lu Yuner, crying beautifully like a pear blossom in the rain.

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan likes Sister Yuner.”

Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.

[Reading Guide]

1. The female lead is gentle, gracious, humble and polite but not weak. The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

2. 1v1, a bit torturous in the beginning but definitely sweet later on.
