The next day, Jeffrey let out a shout upon seeing Edward, whose face was darkened by an unshaven beard.

“Sir! Did you stay out all night again?”

Edward, already at his most irritable, furrowed his brows sharply as Jeffrey’s unwelcome voice pierced his ears.

“Yes. So what.”

“What do you mean, ‘so what’? Obviously, for the sake of peace and happiness in your household!”

At the words “peace and happiness in your household,” Edward’s already furrowed brows drew even closer together, nearly touching.

Yesterday, he had been too afraid to go home and face the empty house.

If he entered the house without Louisa and saw her absence once more with his own eyes, it felt as though time itself would freeze in place.

Seeing Edward’s face twisted in silence, Jeffrey stole a glance at him and added cautiously,

“Of course, I’m also worried about your health.”

“Stop just standing there watching and get over here to work.”

Edward jerked his chin brusquely toward the seat beside him. But Jeffrey, despite his caution, couldn’t help but tack on his suspicion.

“I hate to ask this, but… did you two have a fight?”

“What?”

“I mean, with your wife, Mrs. Allen. Did you two argue?”

“What absurd conjecture is that.”

Edward immediately denied it. But Jeffrey persisted.

“It’s obvious you’re lying when you say nothing happened.”

“Shut up. What exactly are you seeing that makes you talk like that?”

“Haven’t we been stuck without any progress for days already? How could you not know?”

Jeffrey retorted incredulously, pulling out a notebook from his coat and waving it.

“Just confess already. You know we can’t afford to fall further behind schedule.”

At those words, Edward clamped his mouth shut. Glaring at Jeffrey with evident displeasure, he abruptly turned his head away, fixed his gaze on his desk, and muttered,

“I had a fight with Louisa.”

“Ah, I knew it.”

Edward slammed the mug he’d been holding onto the table.

“Shut up.”

“No, come on—it’s not like this is the first time you’ve fought. Besides, you never even paid her any attention before.”

“What?”

“Well, it’s true! You’d always show your foul mood plainly but still got your work done perfectly. For you to suddenly be like this, there must be another reason, right? Should I really just ignore it like usual and do only my part? Can you still keep us on schedule like this?”

“……”

Under Jeffrey’s relentless barrage of questions, Edward could only stare straight ahead, unable to reply.

There was another reason. His wife had asked for a separation.

But for some reason, those words simply wouldn’t leave his lips.

It felt as though saying them aloud would make it real, and since Jeffrey knew both him and her, it would be unbearably awkward.

Yet, given how poorly things were running at the institute right now, staying silent wasn’t really an option either.

After a long internal struggle, Edward decided to be honest about the situation.

“……Louisa told me we should call it quits.”

“Call it quits. I see…… Wait, what?”

Jeffrey, who had been nodding absentmindedly, suddenly widened his eyes and asked belatedly,

“Call it quits? As in, divorce?”

“Don’t make me repeat myself. And don’t even ask me to say it again.”

“Are you insane? No—Sir! Oh dear, I knew this would happen!”

Jeffrey pressed his hand to his forehead, letting out a series of bewildered exclamations.

Though Edward found his theatrics deeply annoying, he needed every bit of help he could get—even if it was just a cat’s paw—so he silently endured Jeffrey’s fussing.

“You knew this would happen?”

“Do couples deeply in love really avoid going home like that?”

“Why not? Besides, how could you possibly know just from that?”

Edward bristled slightly.

How could you possibly understand my position? You couldn’t grasp even a fraction of what I feel for Louisa.

“Oh, right. Of course. It must’ve been so deeply hidden—even from your own wife—that I completely failed to notice your love.”

Stung by Jeffrey’s razor-sharp, undiminished wit, Edward fell silent, unable to retort.

Seeing Edward’s expression darken, Jeffrey decided to stop digging and asked simply,

“So, what did you do?”

“I sent her to Quennel, told her to take some time to clear her head and that we’d talk again later.”

Clear her head? You should’ve just dropped to your knees and begged!

Jeffrey quickly swallowed the words that nearly burst from his mouth and said instead,

“Well… it’s better than barging in recklessly, I suppose.”

Edward’s eyes narrowed dangerously.

That was genuinely an angry look. Flinching, Jeffrey hastily scrambled for something—anything—to say.

“She’ll probably send you a telegram soon anyway. She usually does at times like this, right?”

“A telegram?”

Caught off guard by the unexpected topic, Edward’s intensity softened. His eyes drifted toward his desk.

In the far left corner sat his cardholder, neatly filled with letters and telegrams from his wife.

“If one does come, make sure you reply this time. Understood?”

“Am I a child? Do you really need to remind me of that?”

“I wish you’d reflect a bit on your past behavior.”

“That was only because nothing major ever happened before. This time, something actually has.”

At Edward’s retort, Jeffrey suddenly felt the urge to end this conversation with this fool right then and there.

But remembering how deeply devoted the two had been—recalling the Allens in Greenburg—Jeffrey couldn’t just turn away and added one last remark.

“Since your wife went off to rest and clearly won’t send a telegram, just give up and get back to work.”

Stung by Jeffrey’s blunt jab, Edward shot him a sharp glare. Flinching again, Jeffrey quickly buried his face in his desk.

Ever since hearing the word “telegram,” Edward’s eyes had remained fixed on the clock.

At first, every ten minutes; then every five after a couple of checks; and finally, every single minute.

But the message he hoped for never came. Watching Edward’s head snap around repeatedly, Jeffrey finally couldn’t take it anymore and shouted,

“For heaven’s sake! If you’re so anxious, just go send one yourself!”

At those words, Edward sprang to his feet as if he’d been waiting for them. Startled by his sudden movement, Jeffrey ducked his head and called out,

“Sir?”

“What.”

“Um… you’re really going?”

“Why not? The telegraph office isn’t that far.”

“I know, but you’ve never once left work halfway for something like that before.”

That was true. With nothing left to say, Edward quietly picked up his coat.

He glanced once more at the letters and telegrams from his wife neatly tucked in the cardholder on his desk.

Without a word, he pulled his hat low over his eyes and walked out.

Golden and crimson autumn leaves deepened in color under the sunset’s glow.

“Madam, look at this!”

Rachel, seated beside Louisa, held out a ginkgo leaf.

Watching her from the bench, Louisa recalled a ginkgo leaf she’d once received.

A man had handed her a leaf—unusually bright yellow, just like her hair—and tucked it into a book, saying he was sorry his gift was so simple.

The warmth of his hand as he gently brushed her short hair still lingered in her memory, stinging faintly in the breeze.

Louisa summoned the image of Edward from her memories, savored the happiness of the past for a moment, then shook her head and thought,

‘I promised myself not to think about it.’

If only she could forget that Edward had sent her here, Quennel truly was a wonderful retreat.

She would forget every autumn memory, every familiar scent of earth, and practice not thinking of him.

Surely, that way, she could find happiness again.

She suddenly looked down at her feet.

In the days when she didn’t know him—when she was very young—she used to love stomping on fallen leaves during this season.

Louisa wiggled her feet a few times from where she sat.

Crunch. Crunch.

The dried leaves beneath her shoes broke apart with a brittle sound.

Noticing her actions, Rachel said,

“So you like doing that too, Madam?”

She moved closer to Louisa, giggling brightly, and added, “I used to get smacked by my mom every time I did that!” Then she began stomping on the leaves alongside her.

Crunch. Crunch.

The sound rising from beneath their feet tickled their ears.

Louisa watched the red-haired girl’s sunset-tinged laughter.

Touched by her young attendant’s clear, cheerful smile, Louisa burst into laughter as well.

[This is the timeline separator]

Suddenly noticing their lengthening shadows, Rachel said,

“Madam, the sun’s about to set soon!”

With that, she dashed straight to the bench where they’d left their things and started preparing to leave.

Urged by Rachel’s insistence that they return before sunset, Louisa decided to head back to the hotel.

All the way back, Rachel chattered brightly with a cheerful face.

“This hotel is amazing, Madam! I didn’t know such grand hotels existed outside the capital. How did Master even know about this place?”

Louisa agreed wholeheartedly, echoing the girl’s enthusiasm. Before she knew it, they’d arrived at the hotel, carried along by the child’s lively chatter.

But just as they stepped through the lobby doors, a front desk clerk in uniform approached and asked,

“Are you Mrs. Allen, staying in room 805?”

Wondering why a staff member would seek her out, Louisa replied,

“Yes, that’s me. What’s the matter?”

“There’s a telegram for you, Madam. Here.”

The clerk handed her a neatly folded piece of paper.

Louisa felt her heart drop.

Only her husband would send her a telegram here.

He was the type who never even replied to messages—so the fact that he’d reached out all the way to her travel destination must mean something serious had happened.

She hastily unfolded the paper.

“……What’s this?”

Louisa’s energy drained instantly. Muttering in a confused tone, Rachel, sensing her mood, asked cautiously,

“Is it from the estate? Could something be wrong…?”

“No. Nothing like that. It’s nothing to worry about.”

Louisa quickly denied it, not wanting the girl to fret unnecessarily.

She stared blankly at the paper in her hand.

Instead of speaking aloud, she quietly studied the words written on the page, then folded it neatly and tucked it into the folds of her coat.

My Arch-enemy Sealed My Memory and Said That He is My Husband

This is an incredibly captivating story that you absolutely shouldn’t miss! I’ll give a brief introduction here, and below you’ll find a detailed synopsis of the plot.

The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.

They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.

In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.

When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.

She makes his life a living hell.

And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.

Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!

Intro

Dong Xia lost her memory.

Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”

Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.

…

The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.

She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.

Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.

No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!

Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂

*

Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.

The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.

In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.

The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.

And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.

Notes:

1. The female lead is white on the outside, black on the inside, and the queen of flattery; the male lead repeatedly tests the edge of darkness, a VIP guest at the crematorium.

2. Fantasy cultivation world setting.
