To be honest, Edward thought, this had been the worst date ever.

Both Louisa and I were unwell, and we were short on time, so our preparations were inadequate.

On top of that, there seemed to be so many unfamiliar customs unique to their culture—“Don’t do this,” “Don’t do that”—making me feel as if I were utterly illiterate among them.

Moreover, that suddenly appeared fiancé kept dredging up the past and chattering on nonsensically, while my wife merely told me not to do anything for her, as if mocking my efforts.

And I, in turn, let my emotions get the better of me and ended up treating my wife harshly.

Applause erupted from the audience, signaling the end of the performance.

Edward clapped a few times half-heartedly in rhythm with the crowd, then turned his head to look at his wife.

Louisa’s expression was deeply set and stiff, clearly indicating her foul mood.

‘I wanted to cheer her up.’

I hadn’t initially intended to speak so harshly. I’d been prepared to accept everything as unavoidable, as simply the way things had to be.

But then she told me not to do anything for her.

That felt tantamount to saying there was no point in trying to undo anything anymore.

That our relationship was already over—that we should just quietly drift apart until it was time to separate.

That was the only way I could interpret her words.
