Indeed, the first to sense any change in the master of a manor are always the servants who attend to their every move.

The Allen estate was no exception. The Johnsons, having clearly noticed the subtle shift in the atmosphere between their master and mistress, had recently been on high alert.

One day, the mistress had stopped showing any interest in the master’s comings and goings, prompting them to think, “Ah, our poor, tender-hearted mistress has finally grown resolute.” But lo and behold—this time, it was the master who began to change.

Their marital relationship, which they had once lamented as two parallel lines never meant to meet, now showed signs of change as the master’s formerly unyielding stubbornness began to soften.

Of course, whether for better or worse, this shift was not entirely comfortable for the servants either.

New tasks, different from their usual duties, kept appearing just as they started to forget the last, and they found themselves needing to read the room more often than before.

Yet even so, the Johnsons found it strangely delightful.

They couldn’t help but feel hopeful about what kind of beautiful picture their still-young master and mistress might paint together.

Thus, when Agatha Johnson received sudden news of a picnic outing today, she brightened and asked cheerfully,

“Oh my! You’re planning an outing this weekend? Where might you be going? The weather is lovely today—you could always take a stroll at Lawrence Park.”

But the reply she received was far from what she’d expected.

“The research institute.”

“Excuse me?”

Mrs. Johnson, taken aback, repeated her question. Yet Edward didn’t even look at her as he continued speaking matter-of-factly.

“We’re heading to the institute, so there’s no need for elaborate attire. We’ll just wear our usual outing clothes—just prepare a picnic basket and a mat for us.”
