Louisa called the butler and asked,

“But tell me—did Father perhaps have a separate place where he kept important documents or letters?”

At her sudden question, the butler’s expression grew ambiguous. After rolling his eyes upward in deep thought, he finally replied after several dozen seconds.

“Letters… I’m not sure about letters, but there is a place where he kept important items separately.”

“Really? Then please show me the way.”

Following the butler’s guidance, the two went up to the study once used by the late Philip Aberitt.

The butler opened the study door, entered, opened another door inside, and stepped into the smallest room. There, he pulled out several books from the very last bookshelf, wiped the dust off the shelf once, and then pointed with his hand, saying,

“It’s in here. Go ahead and open it.”

Louisa leaned forward slightly to look at the wall inside the shelf. There, she saw a small safe door that required a key to open.

Staring blankly at it, Louisa asked,

“…Where’s the key to the safe?”

“Right here.”

He fumbled through the middle of the opposite bookshelf and pulled out a book. Opening the cover revealed a hollowed-out space inside. Lifting the lid of the box nestled within, they saw a neatly placed key.

The butler held out the opened book with both hands. Louisa carefully picked up the key inside.

She inserted the key into the safe’s keyhole and turned it, producing a crisp click. The safe door, closed for a long time, swung open.
