Several large wooden tubs were prepared in the courtyard.

Children bustled about, each holding their own bundle of laundry and chattering noisily. The ground was already soaked with water spilled from buckets, enough to make the laundry pile grow even larger.

Amid the commotion, one child—struggling with a blanket as big as herself—spotted someone standing in the distance and cried out.

“Louisa!”

She immediately dropped what she was holding and began running toward her at full speed.

“Good heavens, Yeriel! You can’t just toss the blanket like that!”

Louisa cried out, staring in dismay at the blanket rolling in the dirt.

“Wow, Louisa!”

The child squealed and darted straight into Louisa’s arms. But Louisa gently pulled her out, turned her around to face the mess she’d made, and said,

“Now, Yeriel. I’m glad to see you, but you have to take responsibility for what you’ve done.”

Just then, Karen—carrying the last tub alongside the other children—noticed the disaster and shouted, “Mercy! Liri!” Yeriel looked back and forth between the blanket and Louisa, utterly flustered.

“Go put the blanket back properly first, and then come greet me again.”

At Louisa’s gentle instruction, Yeriel took her hand and shuffled off reluctantly.

Yeriel picked up the blanket again and placed it into the tub. Karen, waiting nearby, then gave the blanket—and the child’s backside—a few firm pats.

“Louisa—”

Yeriel returned, clinging to Louisa’s leg with a sullen pout. Louisa lifted the clinging child into her arms and kissed her cheek.

“Good girl. Have you been well?”

The child’s name was Yeriel Muren.

She was Alyssa Muren’s younger sister, and the Muren sisters had been close to Louisa since their days in Greenburg.

“Yeah… No, I mean, no? I was lonely all by myself. My sister didn’t come either.”

“Alyssa has a lot on her plate right now, doesn’t she? Students about to graduate just can’t help it.”

“Right. The Deputy Director said the same thing. So my sister couldn’t see you today, but I did—I’m going to brag to her!”

The child beamed brightly. Finding her utterly endearing, Louisa kissed her plump cheek once more.

Yeriel’s older sister, Alyssa, was a girl gifted with exceptional academic talent.

At the time, she had been affiliated with the Ernest Foundation’s facility, managed by the Phil family. After the foundation’s mana crystal research succeeded—freeing up funds and enabling her college enrollment—she now diligently pursued her studies as Edward’s junior.

Having finished their laundry preparations, the children gathered in small groups and began splashing around in the tubs.

Even Yeriel, who had stubbornly refused to leave Louisa’s side so she could play with her, was stomping her feet and splashing water everywhere.

“Louisa! The Deputy Director keeps splashing water at me!”

“If you stomp harder and faster, you can do it too, Liri.”

“But the Deputy Director is too tall—the water won’t reach her! Louisa, help me!”

“If I join in, you’ll get twice as wet. Are you sure that’s okay?”

“No! I can dodge it!”

“Really? Then let’s give it a try.”

Louisa began stomping her feet along with the child’s bold declaration.

The cold water soaking her feet, the soft bubbles slipping between her toes.

The sound of splashing water and the children’s clear, ringing laughter filled her ears.

The liveliness of this place seeped into Louisa’s heart like spreading paint.

Dozens of children were laughing.

They were children living not with resentment toward others or self-blame, but with gratitude and hope for those who had made this present moment possible.

Beside her, Karen—who had been competitively splashing water—spoke up.

“How’s it going, Louisa? It’s absolute chaos, isn’t it?”

“Hehe. It really is.”

At Louisa’s cool reply, Karen chuckled softly and said,

“I don’t know what you’re worrying about, but if the answer’s already decided, then follow through—even if it’s hard. If it isn’t, then just go with your heart. That’s my motto.”

She spoke while stomping on the blanket in the tub, her skirt hiked up.

“No matter what hesitation you’re facing, I know you’ll get through it. Because you’re that strong.”

“Strength…”

Louisa shook her head.

“I don’t know. Right now, it honestly feels like I’ve run completely dry.”

It would have been wonderful if she still had that kind of resolve or strength—if only then, they could have simply accepted their pain and lived peacefully without having to show it to each other.

Even though she’d already reached a conclusion, her heart still ached whenever she looked back. She ought to have grown calm after giving up and accepting it, yet she still couldn’t—and remained stuck exactly where she was.

“What matters is that you’re still standing, even while feeling that way. Just like this.”

Karen spread her arms wide as she spoke.

“I’m sure there’s a lot about you I don’t know. But the Louisa I know is someone who, no matter the situation, always finds a way to take responsibility and keep trying. And that’s not easy at all.”

At Karen’s words, Louisa gave a bitter smile.

“It was only because I wished, however faintly, that no child would ever have to dim the light they were born with—simply due to their parents or circumstances. After all, it’s never the children’s fault.”

So that there would never be another child like Edward—so he wouldn’t have to keep brooding over his pain.

But hearing this, Karen laughed brightly, grabbed Louisa’s hand firmly, and looked straight into her eyes.

“Everyone has their own reasons, I suppose. What I want to say is that I’m always grateful to you, Louisa—and that you truly do have enough strength and ability. Today, just like always.”

At Karen’s earnest words, Louisa turned her gaze aside.

“Thank you, Karen.”

A strange emotion welled up in her chest.

Accepting that a rotting leg cannot regenerate is one thing—but deciding to amputate it is something entirely different.

Likewise, feeling the imbalance of a body that no longer matches the empty space left behind would be another ordeal altogether.

And the time spent relearning how to walk again wouldn’t be easy either.

But someday, at the end of it all, she would surely stand on her own two feet once more. And she would look back on those times and say, “Ah, that’s just how things were back then,” as if recalling a distant memory.

“Thank you. I’ll try to stay strong.”

Louisa gently reassured herself—to remember that man, whose face even the children’s smiles now brought to mind, as a good memory.

The drawing room of the mansion.

Edward, who had been peeking out the window repeatedly, abruptly stood up.

The familiar sound of an engine turned off, and Paul stepped out from the driver’s seat to open the rear door. As soon as Louisa emerged, Edward hurried toward her and extended his hand.

Surprised to see the man standing before her, Louisa asked,

“Ed? What about work?”

“I’ve already been back. I got off early today.”

Edward quickly took Louisa’s hand as she reflexively raised it and escorted her inside.

But her outfit was different from this morning’s. Glancing behind her, he saw a large case—she must have borrowed clothes after hers got dirty.

“You’re back safely? Your clothes look different.”

“Oh… yes. They got a little wet, so I borrowed Karen’s.”

“I see.”

No doubt she’d been helping out with chores again. He couldn’t quite hide the sudden stiffness in his expression.

Truthfully, Edward had never been fond of her going off on volunteer work.

Every time he saw his wife reaching out to the children at the facility, he felt oddly irritated. He kept wondering whether he, too, had once appeared to her as someone she needed to comfort—comparing himself to them endlessly.

Yet that was precisely why he couldn’t bring himself to say anything.

The reason was far too petty—and he was far too ashamed of himself.

That she even went as far as helping with menial tasks under the guise of volunteering was enough to drive him mad.

After all, what had made her so accustomed to such chores in the first place?

The very things his wife had learned to do were scars left behind by his own sins.

She was the most noble person he knew—he wanted her treated as such, and though it was late, he desperately wished to make it so himself.

Then why couldn’t he?

He swallowed the sorrow welling up in his throat.

Forcing a smile, Edward said,

“Right. You must be tired. Let’s go in.”

Louisa looked up at him with the expressionless face she’d grown used to lately.

Seeing his wife’s unreadable face, Edward thought,

‘Is this the unhappiness you spoke of?’

But even so, I love you. Even if I must carry all this unhappiness, staying by your side is the only way I know how to live.

He made up his mind to lie.

Louisa came up to her room.

“Is it really alright for me to be out there like that?”

She’d been genuinely surprised to see her husband waiting for her. Partly because he’d never greeted her like this before—but even more so because she remembered him always looking exhausted.

“It would’ve been nice if days like today had happened more often.”

If only there had been moments—just once in a while—when he’d held her hand, looked her in the eyes, and helped her ease the day’s fatigue with a simple “You worked hard” or “Thank you.”

Knock knock.

A soft knock came from behind her. She opened the door to find her husband standing there.

“Ed?”

Edward met her eyes, parted his lips briefly, and took a deep breath.

“I came because I wanted to talk.”

“Come in.”

Louisa opened the door wider. Edward glanced between the table and the bed, hesitated for a moment, then pulled out a chair from the table and sat down.

“What would you like to talk about?”

“Your words… about divorce.”

“Yes.”

Edward clasped his hands together. Keeping his gaze fixed on his own hands resting on his knees, he spoke softly.

“I’m sorry, but could you possibly delay it just a little? Honestly, I hadn’t planned to say this much.”

“What do you mean?”

“…You know how I’m being attacked from all sides. Especially by Westwood.”

He bowed his head and explained the company’s situation.

“Right now, even I couldn’t survive another blow like divorce rumors. So please—just until the company stabilizes. I’m asking you.”

He spoke the lie he’d prepared.

Ex-husband Wants Reconciliation

One-line summary: Chasing the wife to the crematorium (making an effort to attract someone who has become indifferent), the female lead doesn’t look back, the second male lead takes the position.

Intro:

To repay the kindness of the older generation, Su Mu crossed into a female-dominated world and became a live-in daughter-in-law of the Yan family, single-handedly saving the Yan family from fire and water.

But her husband, Yan Jiyue, the eldest son of the Yan family, treated her with sarcasm and never showed her a good face.

It wasn’t until after Su Mu’s death that this pampered and arrogant young master shed a few fake tears and pretended to want to die for love.

This life’s kindness was enough. If there was a next life, she would definitely kick Yan Jiyue away.

Who knew that the heavens would be so kind as to allow her to be reborn, returning to the time when she had just married into the Yan family.

Su Mu glanced at the Yan eldest son, who still spoke coldly to her, and threw a divorce letter in front of him.

“Let’s divorce!”

***

Yan Jiyue never imagined that he would be reborn. He happily went to find Su Mu, wanting to make up for the mistakes he had made in his ignorant youth.

Wasn’t the reason the heavens allowed him to be reborn to let him reconcile with Su Mu?

But when he pushed open the door to Su Mu’s room, the person lying on the bed was another man.

Su Mu’s personal attendant, Xie Yi.

Yan Jiyue hated him so much that his teeth itched. In front of Su Mu, Xie Yi was a gentle and considerate whisperer of sweet nothings, but in reality, he was vicious-hearted and deliberately sabotaged their husband and wife relationship.

In the previous life, it was he who secretly hid in Su Mu’s coffin and committed suicide, stealing a step ahead of him to be buried with Su Mu.

Yan Jiyue’s eyes were filled with hatred as he cursed, “What kind of thing are you? Your background is lowly, what right do you have to occupy Su Mu?”

Xie Yi looked at the sleeping Su Mu and no longer pretended to be a whisperer of sweet nothings.

He proudly stuck out his belly, “I have the right because my belly is capable of giving the Wife-master a daughter.”

***

Yan Jiyue was consumed with jealousy. He spread rumors that Xie Yi had once been branded with the mark of a “harlot” on his chest.

But on the night Xie Yi cut off the flesh bearing that mark, Su Mu suddenly realized something was amiss.

“How did you know the exact moment I was poisoned? And why did you show up a month early?”

Xie Yi remained silent, blood from his wound soaking through his robes. His sapphire eyes brimmed with anguish – or was it just a flawless act?

Between a once-arrogant husband now seeking redemption, and a gentle soul willing to die for her – who truly held the darkest secrets? And could it be that Su Mu and Yan Jiyue weren’t the only ones given a second chance at life…?

[Reading Guide]

1. True divorce, chasing the wife to the crematorium, the female lead doesn’t look back, the male lead is Xie Yi.

2. The ex-husband did not cheat, he just realized too late and didn’t realize that he liked the female lead.
