Why do the people who should die remain perfectly alive, while only those who must not die leave this world?

It was clear that the gods hated Ansi. Otherwise, they wouldn’t keep taking people away from her like this.

‘Mother too…’

A day from a year ago surfaced in Ansi’s mind.

It had happened not long after her father’s death.

Her mother, Sophia, had thrown herself into the Venyu River that divided the capital—but a man had saved her. According to witnesses, the man, who wore a hat pulled low over his face, left immediately afterward, so no one knew who he was.

〈I’m sorry. I’ll never do that again, Ansi…〉

Ansi, who had shown no emotion and quickly sought ways to survive even after her father’s death, could only shed silent tears. Seeing this, Sophia turned pale and apologized. After that, she never attempted it again.

Meanwhile, Ansi, having witnessed even her mother trying to take her own life, thought:

She would surely kill the wretch who had taken everything from her.

Ansi curled up on the floor.

She would kill Cardian, and that damn debt collector too.

Afterward, she felt it might become a little easier. The world ahead, so dark and suffocating, might finally brighten just a little.

Henet de Maron, sitting on a sofa with a bored expression as he smoked a cigar, gently crushed it out after a few puffs.

At the Low Club—a gathering place in the capital for distinguished gentlemen—he had been waiting for his friend Damion de Orphe, who’d recently been frequenting the place. But even after several hours, there was no sign of him appearing.

He probably wouldn’t come today after all! Right, he’d mentioned a business trip to the south—he wouldn’t come here straight away without even resting.

Henet stood up, thinking it was just as well. After all, he hadn’t come to meet a friend today but had reluctantly agreed to his father’s insistence to discuss something more official.

“Henet.”

Damion arrived just as Henet was getting up from his seat. Startled, Henet plopped back onto the sofa.

“Why did you come?”

“Am I not allowed in this place?”

Damion chuckled softly and sat down on the opposite sofa. His crimson lips, after downing the shot of whiskey in his hand, traced a beautifully curved line. His brow furrowed slightly from the strong liquor.

What did women say again? Even the crease between his brows looked sexy.

“Ugh.”

Henet shuddered, breaking out in goosebumps. Damion frowned, looking puzzled at his odd reaction. Seeing Damion’s well-groomed eyebrows arch upward, Henet simply shrugged.

“I heard Viscount Jiden’s daughter is utterly smitten with you.”

“That party was just yesterday, Henet.”

“In one day, I could tell you exactly how many couples at that party became engaged after locking eyes. So, how was the south?”

“Pretty awful.”

“Why?”

“A woman tried to kill herself right in front of me.”

Damion’s expression as he recalled that moment was genuinely unpleasant. Henet raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

“Lord Lieutenant Orphe, who’s seen so much death—what’s so frightening about someone dying in front of you?”

“I hate it. Watching someone commit suicide right before my eyes.”

Why did everyone keep doing that? Damion’s quiet mutter didn’t reach Henet, who was still pondering how to broach the matter he’d come for.

But Damion offered the opening himself.

“If you’ve got something to say, just say it.”

“How did you know I had something to tell you?”

Without answering, Damion pulled out another cigar. Watching his friend lower his eyes and light it, Henet finally resolved his hesitation.

Staring at the rising smoke, he spoke as if resigning himself.

“My father wants you as his son-in-law—to pair you with my younger sister, Helsia.”

Damion raised an eyebrow, though he didn’t seem particularly surprised.

Well, at twenty-five, this perfect marriage prospect was surely receiving countless proposals—it’d be stranger if no one expected it.

Damion de Orphe.

The Empire’s war hero. The living incarnation of the god of war, Lugesey. The beloved second son of Duke Orphe’s house.

And recently, he’d acquired another title: the most handsome man in the Belgarder Empire.

Having secluded himself in the military for a full five years, Damion had suddenly retired just a few months ago after sustaining an injury. Only now had high society begun to take serious notice of him.

Whether at parties, salons, or clubs, his appearances always sparked endless chatter afterward.

Beyond his looks, his noble lineage and capabilities were exceptional. Add to that his natural charm and wit, which earned him widespread admiration. His business acumen was equally remarkable—his investment in floriculture right after retirement had become an instant success.

To those who didn’t know him, his perfection seemed almost too good to be true—surely just a rumor fabricated by House Orphe.

Thus, those who did know him rushed to secure him before someone else could. This included Marquis Maron, Henet’s father.

Of course, Henet himself considered Damion a good friend. For someone like him, who rarely formed deep bonds, Damion was rather special.

Yet, he never believed Damion would make a good husband.

“You don’t seem to want me matched with your sister.”

“Right. I hate the idea…”

“Normally, wouldn’t you say something polite like ‘That’d be great’? I’m quite a catch, you know. I’d treat Miss Helsia kindly.”

“How long would that last? If you pair our Helsia with someone as twisted and ambitious as you, she’ll wither away and die.”

“Henet, if you act long enough, even pretense becomes truth.”

“So are you saying you’d actually accept the marriage?”

Henet leaned forward. Damion, lounging lazily, observed Henet’s shocked expression. Just as Henet was about to speak again, unable to hold back any longer—

“Unfortunately, I can’t marry Miss Helsia.”

“What’s wrong with our Helsia?”

Henet asked, stung by wounded pride—after all, he’d just argued against the match, yet now felt slighted that Damion wouldn’t accept it. Damion replied dismissively.

“Marriage isn’t a win-win; it’s a zero-sum game. If there’s a plus, it must belong to me.”

Meaning, of course, that the wife would inevitably be on the minus side. Was he simply selfish, or was she supposed to thank him for his “consideration” in sparing Helsia?

“Besides, my family has assigned me a position elsewhere.”

From Duke Orphe’s house? Henet’s eyebrows lifted slightly, wordlessly. He couldn’t tell if it was a good appointment or not.

“Is this someone you think will give you that ‘plus’?”

“Not at all.”

Just as expected.

“But you never know. Maybe I’ll meet fate itself.”

Sure, right.

Even as he thought that, Henet gave a nod, offering his friend’s blessing in a voice utterly devoid of emotion.

“Yes. I truly hope you find a good match.”

Along Ronze Street on the outskirts of the capital, Felitz, buildings with a consistent architectural style lined the avenue. Ansi stepped down from the shared carriage and walked with restrained movements.

The weather, still chilly compared to the south, prompted her to tighten her coat. Fortunately, her destination was near. She knocked on the door, and it swung open immediately as if someone had been waiting.

“You’re here, Rain!”

Madam Roma welcomed Ansi inside with a wide smile, though her eagerness bordered on urgency rather than mere delight.

“Did you have something urgent for me?”

That was Ansi’s conclusion.

Madam Roma ran a few small businesses, one of which involved arranging simple odd jobs.

The requests varied widely: delivering southern fruits, writing letters on someone’s behalf, summarizing books…

Ansi regularly took work from her because her servant’s wages alone couldn’t cover living expenses and medicine.

“I always have this much work lined up for you. But today’s job is truly urgent and significant.”

“Before that—can you sell this?”

Ansi pulled out a fountain pen and held it out. Madam Roma’s eyes widened as she examined it.

“Where did you get this? It’s quite valuable.”

“I received it.”

“But there’s an engraved name. What should I say about your relationship with the owner when selling it?”

“Tell them we had no relationship at all.”

“Alright.”

Even as she agreed, Roma thought to herself:

I’ll say it’s from a secret lover.

That explanation always worked neatly for selling personalized items. It avoided awkward questions about theft and kept the provenance discreet—after all, prying into nobles’ private affairs often ended in bloodshed.

“The commission is twenty percent.”

“Thank you. Now, about the job.”

“Rain, you’ll need to dress as a noble lady.”

Ansi’s lips parted slightly. Her blue eyes instinctively clouded with wariness.

Ignoring this, Roma brought out several high-quality dresses from inside. Holding them up against Ansi, she hurriedly continued.

“Well, strictly speaking, not exactly a noble lady. Anyway, a young woman urgently requested this a few days ago. Her family arranged a meeting for her, but this foolish girl already has someone she loves.”

“…And?”

“Yes, this dress will do. Anyway, she needs someone to take her place and cause a scene.”

“So you’re asking me to play that role?”

“Exactly. Rain, didn’t I tell you? You’ve got a quiet elegance about you—perfect for this.”

Ansi’s expression hardened. Impersonating someone else—this was entirely different from any job she’d done before.

“I won’t do it.”

Ansi pushed Roma’s hand away. Roma pretended to nudge her with her elbow and teased lightly,

“This one job pays five hundred looses.”

Five hundred looses—far more than two months’ worth of servant wages. But… the risk was too great. Until she killed Cardian de Orphe, she refused to put herself in the spotlight in any way.

“I can’t do it, Madam.”

“Don’t be like that. It’s not like you have to cause real trouble. Look, Rain—if you just act as aloof as you naturally are, that’ll be enough. Don’t worry so much. And if you knew who the man was…”

“Find someone else suitable.”

“It has to be today. If you don’t do it, that’s the end.”

Roma made a pained face. But Ansi shook her head firmly and stepped back. Seeing her resolute expression, Roma sighed deeply.

“Ugh… then who’s going to meet young Master Orphe…?”

At those words, Ansi froze. A glint flashed in her raised blue eyes.
