Ariel wanted to live.

She thought she could stay calm, but as soon as she started writing a letter to leave for her parents, she burst into tears and couldn’t do anything else.

Just one more time.

The moment the path opened, she spurred her horse until her body felt like it would break apart, desperate to see Kaius’s face once more and try to persuade him again. When he noticed her and slowly approached, Ariel quickly turned her horse’s head and backed away—trying to maintain a safe distance—but Kaius’s eyes narrowed at the sight.

Kaius halted and tilted his head slightly. Lemon, standing beside him, looked puzzled, and Butler Ted was no different.

“I came to ask you just once more. Please, allow me.”

All the way here, Ariel had repeatedly sworn to herself she wouldn’t cry. Thanks to that resolve, she managed to speak in a fairly composed voice when she saw him.

Kaius could feel firsthand just how sincere Ariel was about wanting to live. He didn’t need to know for sure—the fact that her current decision wasn’t easy was obvious. The way she kept her distance suggested she’d bolt the instant he refused.

How recklessly naive she was. She seemed somewhat prepared, but to him, it was merely laughable. No matter how much distance she tried to put between them, now that she stood right before his eyes, he would never let her go.

“Come in.”

Kaius spoke in a low voice and turned around, walking straight into the mansion.

Ariel didn’t budge. If she went in, he surely wouldn’t let her leave again.

“Give me your answer first.”

At Ariel’s firm demand, Kaius slowly turned back and stared at her for a long while. His gaze swept slowly over the passersby before settling once more on Ariel’s face.

“Come in.”
