This Life, I Will Save The Duke (20 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 74
Kaius slowly unrolled the tightly coiled note and began reading its contents.
[Your Grace, my lady left the house two days ago in the afternoon and has not returned since. It seems something went wrong due to the heavy snowfall. We only found out yesterday evening, and because of the snow, we are only able to send word now. We have quietly begun searching and will humbly request your pardon once we have safely brought the lady back.]
For a moment, Kaius stared blankly into space before his gaze returned to the note. A droplet slid from his damp hair down his firm jawline and fell with a soft plink between the open sides of his robe.
Lemon, watching him, held his breath. He sensed the air around Kaius chilling, growing unnaturally still.
Kaius smiled faintly.
He understood. She hadn’t been delayed by the snow—she had run away from him.
He quietly tossed the note into the fireplace; it turned to ash and vanished almost instantly. Without a word, Kaius entered the dressing room and emerged fully dressed.
“Your Grace, I apologize, but… at the moment, not only carriages but even horses cannot move. Snow removal has only just begun, so the roads likely won’t open until evening—if the snow stops falling altogether. Moreover, my lady must have taken shelter somewhere safe to avoid danger, so please do not worry.”
At Lemon’s words, Kaius turned toward the window and gazed outside. The world was blanketed entirely in snow—the very snow she loved had now shackled his steps. With a long, hollow sigh, Kaius suddenly recalled the previous notes. He had to uncover what he had carelessly overlooked—the reason she had resorted to such an extreme act.
As Lemon opened the bedroom door, Butler Ted stood outside, holding a mobile tray laden with breakfast.
“Your Grace, where shall I set the meal?”
“Put it away.”
***
“What about recruiting the spy?”
Ludvian felt slightly frustrated, having missed the periodic reports on Ariel’s status. Though, truthfully, nothing major was likely to have changed.
