Ariel tilted her head in confusion, then fell into brief contemplation before fixing him with a bold gaze.

“Then put me down. I don’t like being in this position.”

Kaius, unexpectedly compliant, set her down beside him and leaned deeply into the sofa. Crossing his legs and propping his head up with one arm, he looked down at Ariel from an angle. Meeting his gaze, Ariel felt somewhat flustered.

Recently, he had acted as though he had no interest in her beyond sharing meals or physical intimacy—but the moment Aliune arrived, he severed all contact. Though she felt relieved and deeply reassured by this, another unfamiliar emotion stirred within her, one she couldn’t quite understand.

‘Your only purpose now, Ariel, is to raise Aliune as quickly as possible.’

It felt as if he were saying those very words. It was certainly the right thing to say, and Ariel agreed with it—yet something in her heart kept feeling strangely off. To her embarrassment, it was a sense of disappointment.

Seeing Ariel stare at him with that helpless look, Kaius realized that, at this rate, the moment he truly desired would never come.

“When is the hatchling dragon’s first growth stage expected?”

“…Huh?”

Taken aback by the sudden question, Ariel blinked blankly for a moment before her face brightened.

“Judging by what’s written in the books, it should happen within a month. Lately, it’s been sleeping much longer than usual—probably because its growth period is approaching.”

This was the first time Kaius had ever shown interest in the hatchling. After every battle with monsters, he’d always rushed straight back to the greenhouse without a second thought. Perhaps because of that, Ariel began chattering eagerly, even volunteering details he hadn’t asked for—El’s mischievousness and fiery temperament, how Kai was remarkably calm, and even general traits of the dragon species she knew.
