There's a Snake in the Empress' Bedroom (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 6
Tessa dashed through the mansion with her tiny feet.
The place where Tessa found Cassius was a secluded training ground.
Though abandoned and old, the mansion still maintained its dignity as if remembering its former glory.
Cassius was swinging his sword like a beast, as though trying to shake off the humiliation he’d suffered at the Emperor’s hands.
Tessa called out to him at the top of her lungs.
“Sir Cassius!! Keluk! Ca—ssi—us—Sir!”
Just as Tessa, recalling others’ warnings that one must never step near Cassius when he held his sword, stamped her feet impatiently and cleared her throat—
Fortunately, Cassius seemed to have heard Tessa’s voice and stopped his training.
“What’s all this commotion about?”
Cassius approached, wiping sweat with a towel, and ruffled Tessa’s hair.
“Um! It’s just that!”
“Catch your breath.”
Cassius handed Tessa the waterskin he had been carrying.
Tessa drank some water and quickly wiped her lips.
“Visitors have arrived, Sir Cassius! Sir Terrion says you should quickly bathe and come out!”
“Terrion? Didn’t he go out to get formal attire?”
“Well…! The Pearst Earl’s household sent a gift! A madam from the dressmaker’s shop brought people along! They’re looking for you, Sir Cassius—they’ve come to tailor your outfit for the banquet!”
Cassius frowned.
The Pearst Earl’s household?
What kind of family would show such kindness to a knight of slave origin?
Since childhood, he’d learned through experience that kindness always came with a price.
‘Damn it. I need to know something about the court.’
Cassius, who had only just entered the court, had no information at all.
Terrion had been running around gathering what he could, but even that wasn’t enough.
After all, Cassius was only just entering the court’s circles, while the central nobles remained tightly knit like stagnant water.
And yet, the Pearst Earl’s household had reached out without even prior notice.
Cassius strode off roughly.
Several knights were anxiously pacing in the hall.
One knight, spotting Cassius, latched onto him with a pale face.
“Ladies—ladies have just arrived! Here at this mansion!”
“So what?”
“They’re ladies! Not just one, but several…! And incredibly beautiful!”
“Let go already! Why are you all so flustered!”
“Ladies, I said! Should I fetch water, or… should I fetch water myself? Hey, do you know how to prepare tea?”
“Do we even have tea in this mansion?”
“We can surely manage that much!”
The knights began bickering amongst themselves.
Cassius gave them an incredulous look before striding briskly upstairs.
Since Terrion was here, he’d surely be handling the guests properly.
Tessa came running eagerly toward Cassius.
“They must be startled—seeing ladies after so long.”
Her giggling face was adorable. Cassius gave a small chuckle and shook his head.
“Foolish. Tessa, keep a close eye on what they’re up to. You know as well as I do—they’re all heart and no sense.”
“Yes!”
Tessa nodded enthusiastically and hurried back downstairs.
Cassius watched her retreating figure for a moment.
He kept Tessa with him only because she remembered nothing and had nowhere else to go…
But perhaps he should send her somewhere better.
This place had only rough knights, and no one to properly care for Tessa.
It would be nice if the Emperor granted Cassius a proper fiefdom…

“Tch.”
This wasn’t the time for such thoughts.
First, he needed to attend the banquet.
Cassius shook his head and stepped into the bathroom.
With his hair still damp, Cassius entered the reception room.
As expected, Terrion was sweating profusely while entertaining the guest.
Seeing Cassius, Terrion beamed with a bright smile.
“Over here! Please sit quickly!”
The woman who had been speaking with Terrion rose from her seat and bowed.
“I am Madam Turiel, proprietor of Turiel Atelier. Please just call me Turiel, Sir Cassius.”
Terrion quickly whispered to Cassius.
“She’s nobility, I tell you—real nobility!”
“…Who sent you?”
“The Pearst Earl’s household.”
Turiel straightened gracefully and spoke.
Though her tone was gentle and courteous, Turiel clearly carried the innate elegance of nobility in her very bones.
That someone like her would treat Cassius with such deference meant the Pearst Earl’s household surely held some secret.
Cassius plopped down into a chair.
“Sit. We should talk first. Accepting gifts without caution is a sure way to end up with serious trouble.”
Turiel smiled sweetly.
“Yes, of course.”
She sat back down.
“Would you mind dismissing those nearby? My staff will withdraw as well.”
Cassius nodded, and Terrion reluctantly led everyone else out the door with a disappointed look.
The door soon closed. Cassius spoke sharply.
“Terrion! Step back twenty paces from there.”
“Tch!”
A grumbling sound came from outside, followed by fading footsteps.
Cassius crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair.
“The Pearst Earl’s household has served the Rotera family for generations.”
Turiel began speaking in a soft voice.
“This morning, Lindey—the head maid of the Empress’s quarters—came to see me. She commissioned attire for you, Sir Cassius. Do you know who sent me?”
Since she clearly had no intention of hiding it, Turiel confessed openly.
Lindey had asked her to proceed under the Pearst name but hadn’t told her to conceal the truth from Cassius.
“Empress Renisha.”
Renisha seemed to appear once more before Cassius’s eyes.
The woman who had gazed at him with those proud, pink-hued eyes.
Behind her, the faint image of Duke Rotera galloping away on horseback also flickered into view.
Cassius brushed his lips with his hand.
“Why would Her Majesty… trouble herself over someone like me?”
“I do not know. But Her Majesty the Empress has chosen you, Sir Cassius. Now it is your turn to give your answer. Will you accept the gift?”
Cassius tapped his forearm with his fingers.
‘Am I really in a position to pick between cold or hot meals?’
At that banquet, the Empress had been the only one who seemed truly sane.
Duke Rotera came to mind again.
Was he still guiding Cassius even from beyond the grave? His presence kept circling through Cassius’s thoughts.
Cassius nodded heavily.
“I’ll accept it.”
“Very good. You’ve made the right choice.”
If he asked about Renisha, would she answer?

Cassius observed Turiel, who had entered this knight-filled mansion yet remained composed and unruffled the entire time.
He was curious about what kind of person the Empress truly was.
Just as Cassius hesitated, about to speak—
Knock knock!
“I’ve brought tea!”
Terrion, unable to contain his curiosity, was quick to act.
“Tea?”
Before Cassius could even question whether such a thing existed here, the door burst open.
Terrion glanced between the two and placed cups filled with a deep green liquid before Turiel and Cassius.
Cassius looked at it with an odd expression, then took a sip.
“Ugh! Cough!”
He covered his mouth and forced down the bitter liquid.
Stung by the harsh bitterness in his throat, Cassius glared at Terrion.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“What on earth did you bring? Poison?”
“Of course not! It’s herbal tea, brewed with care! That was the best I could manage!”
Turiel, who had been smiling, took delicate sips of her tea.
“It’s quite bitter from steeping too long, but it’s marigold tea. Thank you.”
Good heavens—she actually drank it like that? Truly no ordinary woman.
Cassius clicked his tongue briefly.
Fortunately, Cassius had accepted the gift sent.
Since Turiel had handled everything well, Cassius might have grasped at least part of Renisha’s intention.
Renisha had extended her hand to Cassius first.
Renisha fiddled with her necklace.
It was a small locket she always wore around her neck.
Something she often did whenever lost in thought.
Late that evening, an uninvited guest came to see Renisha.
“No!”
“Step aside. His Majesty the Emperor would surely be pleased to hear of this behavior. I merely wish to have a brief chat with Her Majesty before the banquet. Imagine the embarrassment if our dresses happened to match!”
It was half a threat.
If Renisha refused to see her now, she’d surely humiliate Renisha at the banquet.
Renisha rose from where she’d been leaning against her chair.
“Let her in.”
“But, Your Majesty!”
The maids grimaced.
Renisha well understood their feelings—they couldn’t even bear sharing the same room’s air with Canaria.
In truth, all of Renisha’s maids were of noble birth.
Canaria, who held no title whatsoever, was in no position to behave so boldly.
“She can’t help it—she was never properly taught. We must treat her with pity.”
Canaria apparently heard those words through the forcibly opened door crack.
Renisha lifted the corners of her lips.
“With no one to rely on but another woman’s husband, how lonely she must be. One ought to have some compassion.”
“For a barren stone of a woman who can’t even conceive.”
Canaria shot back sharply and pushed her way inside.
She pointed her fan directly at Renisha.
“Now that you’ve lost your husband’s favor, you’ve gone completely blind, haven’t you?”
“What expectations could one possibly have of a woman who places her worth solely in bearing children—in nothing but the womb she was born with? Isn’t that right, Lindey?”
Lindey broke into a broad smile.
Renisha responded simply, as if she hadn’t even heard Canaria’s words.
Renisha fiddled with her hair.

“To act so rudely without even the master’s permission… It seems your time in the Imperial Palace was utterly wasted.”
“It is Your Majesty who—”
Canaria trembled, her face flushed red.
Only after swallowing hard could she continue speaking.
“You’ll soon be driven out of the Imperial Palace—what will you do then, acting like this?”
Canaria let out a throaty laugh.
“What if this Canaria were to bear His Majesty the Emperor’s child? What would you do then?”
“We’ll see.”
Renisha turned her gaze toward Canaria.
Meeting Renisha’s eyes, Canaria instinctively stepped two paces backward.
Those cold, pink eyes pierced straight through her.
“Aren’t you yourself the one who’s failed to conceive for years? Are you even certain you can bear a child?”
Renisha had cleverly struck at Canaria’s deepest insecurity.
Rumors among court gossips claimed the mad Emperor had lost his fertility.
Canaria bit her lip tightly.
She’d assumed Renisha, humiliated at the banquet, would be somewhat broken.
That was why she’d pushed her way in—to see that pitiful face.
Seeing it would surely soothe her anger.
Yet Renisha remained as arrogant as ever—infuriatingly so.
Canaria was reminded once more of her past self—the lowly maid who used to wash the Empress’s feet.
