The crisp autumn air was pierced by sharp sunlight. Through the wide-open window, a woman with golden hair as bright as the sun wandered through the maze garden.

Edwin took a bitter sip of coffee and set aside his newspaper.

Sophie had informed him that Vivian was not in poor condition. However, he had expected Vivian—angry over yesterday’s incident—to demonstrate just how furious she was by refusing to budge from her room.

Thus, it was purely by chance while reading the newspaper that he noticed Vivian darting about the maze garden, defying his expectations.

Vivian hurriedly retreated from dead-end paths again and again, repeating the same futile motions endlessly.

He began seriously watching Vivian’s attempts to find an exit only after she got stuck circling endlessly in one spot.

A knock sounded, and the door opened. Confirming it was Charlotte, Edwin’s gaze returned to the top of her head, just barely peeking above the tall boxwood hedge.

Charlotte followed his intent stare. There, newly constructed, lay the maze garden.

“What brings you here?”

Curious about what had captured his attention, Charlotte’s eyes kept drifting toward the window. When Edwin finally looked away from the view outside, her eyes returned to him. Their gazes met, and tension surged—she clenched her skirt tightly and gathered her courage.

“…Last time, you said you’d grant me one wish in exchange for giving Vivian her hat back. I’ve come to make that wish.”

He had openly coveted the hat Vivian had gifted him, and eventually obtained it—thus earning the right to ask Edwin for a favor. Though he felt guilty toward Vivian, the gift had cleared his path, making it the best present imaginable.

“So, what’s your wish?”

The corners of Edwin’s mouth deepened into a smile. Leaning back comfortably in his chair, he asked in a familiar tone.

“For the record, canceling our engagement isn’t allowed. That doesn’t count as a wish.”
