Only in the evening was the sign hanging in front of the dressmaker’s shop finally flipped over. Afterward, Theo led her to his home, where he lived with his family.

Charlotte was unexpectedly introduced to Theo’s family. Mrs. Evans, warm and kind, along with his cheerful younger siblings—without even being asked—showed her the late Mr. Evans’ belongings kept on the shelf.

There was nothing more unsettling than peering into the daily life of someone she had once so harshly condemned.

Afterward, Charlotte had no choice but to recount to Theo every detail of what had happened at the mansion. Since it was Evans himself who had originally wanted to hear about it, she carefully omitted certain incidents—such as when she had hurled insults at Vivian—and continued her story accordingly.

Only after she finished explaining everything, including the circumstances that led to her being expelled by Edwin, did Evans finally stop gaping in shock. He sank heavily into a wooden chair as though deflated and let out a long, weary sigh.

“So, let me get this straight.”

His voice, faintly tinged with anger, made her tense.

“You became a maid at the mansion, and your maid—that woman named Merian out there—concocted some scheme that was discovered by the Duke, resulting in both of you being thrown out? Is that correct?”

“Please don’t misunderstand. I didn’t order her to do it. Though Miss Ebelline is an unwelcome guest to me, I wouldn’t stoop to such underhanded tactics.”

Theo shook his exhausted head with a deep breath. Though he momentarily felt detached from reality, Vivian remained vividly present in his mind even when he closed his eyes.

He deeply pondered what Vivian truly wanted and what kind of person he needed to become for her. If only he had been a better person to Vivian from the very beginning, perhaps he wouldn’t now be hearing such stories from someone else’s lips.

Thinking of Vivian, who must have suffered alone without a single ally, brought tears to his eyes. Guilt gnawed at his chest—he realized it was precisely he who had abandoned Vivian to struggle all by herself.

“In any case, thank you sincerely. Thanks to you, I’ll be able to stay somewhere safe. I won’t cause you any trouble.”

Theo, snapping back to reality, straightened his head and rubbed his temples.
