Merian, who had been whispering into Charlotte’s ear, pouted petulantly and stepped away. Charlotte closed the book she had been reading, her face hardening with cold resolve.

“Who met whom?”

“Baron Zimmermann and Ebelline. They say the two had a long conversation in the back garden.”

Merian lowered her voice sharply and spitefully condemned the other.

“It must be a habit. Like a bat flitting from place to place. The mere thought that such a woman shares the same space as you makes my skin crawl. And to think—he’s your fiancé….”

Charlotte shot Merian a sharp glare, silencing her mid-tirade as she clamped her lips shut. After a moment of contemplation, Charlotte exhaled deeply, followed by a hollow laugh.

Contrary to Merian’s accusations, Charlotte could already picture the situation clearly in her mind. Thus, the emotion welling inside her was directed—not at Ebelline—but at Baron Zimmermann.

The baron was a man who refused to take no for an answer.

He should have gracefully withdrawn from this engagement after she’d made her feelings abundantly clear—it would have been the gentlemanly thing to do.

So, what exactly had Vivian said to Baron Zimmermann?

Ebelline wasn’t the sort to do something dishonorable for personal gain, nor was Edwin easily manipulated by such petty schemes.

It was simply that nothing would have pleased Vivian more than causing Vivian pain.
